...they want me to pay for insurance on their hire car while they fix it.

What is the deal with that?!

62 plate car, finance, they know the issue said to bring in and fix. They then throw that little gem in there...

Are you FC with permission to drive other cars? If so, wave that at them. If not, then I believe a surcharge is standard practise as when I had to take our new car back when they stuffed up some wiring, the garage wanted about a tenner charge unless I had insurance permission to drive other cars.

It is odd
In the past with this sort of thing I've been asked to pay some sort of damage waiver bring the excess payment you're liable for down from exorbitant £500+ to something reasonable level. But then that was when I sort of understood insurance!

Would have thought their hire car would be already insured (under the new continuous insurance dictatorship) or even their staff could not wreck use it as a runabout.

Didn't work for my courtesy car from Jennings Ford, iirc they claimed it was because it only covered 3rd party not FC.

Ford tried it with me, my car was brand new and had numerous problems followed by a missing factory option.

The first two fixes were 20min jobs that they did while I waited, the third took a day and I needed to go to work. They tried to say I was on my insurance but even though I had FC I didn't have other vehicles on the policy.

After a bit of grumping they went and found some special forms in the back office that had 1 day insurance on them and did it that way.

Can't guarantee they'd do it everywhere though. Thing is, it's up to them how they hire out their cars but it seems fair that you shouldn't go without either. Perhaps suggest to them that you'll hire a car and they can pay for it Wink

Indeed, "other car" cover will be 3rd party only.

You could ask your insurer to switch cover to the courtesymobile for the duration, but then you'll likely get raped on admin charges.

To be fair (sorry) it's not entirely unreasonable as long as they're just covering their costs rather than turning a profit from it.

Also: 62 plate car? I drive a 03 plate Citroen C3, you toff, get your butler to drive you around. Razz

What use is an uninsured loaner car?

It will be insured and I struggle to believe it wont be insured for customers to drive.

surely the argument of "my car should actually be working, as it's warranty issue / should have been sorted before sale why don't you bill Ford" should work?

never ever heard of anyone having to pay insurance on a courtesy car - we didn't have to pay on the hire car that the SEAT garage got for us to use while they fixed our car a little while back.

I know they don't 'have' to give out a courtesy car, but in the circumstances you hint at, they ought to

Is it actually a courtesy car from the dealership or a car from a rental company?

Don't forget you have no automatic right to a 'courtesy car', they are quite within their rights to fix your car under warranty without supplying you with alternative transport.

Is it a quick fix? If so arrange to drop the car off at an allotted time and wait whilst they do the job.

Do you have third party insurance or are you FC?

With my company Volkswagen car I (well I charge the company) get charged about £10 per day for their cover. Only because our business only insures it's vehicles third party.
