It is odd
In the past with this sort of thing I've been asked to pay some sort of damage waiver bring the excess payment you're liable for down from exorbitant £500+ to something reasonable level. But then that was when I sort of understood insurance!
Would have thought their hire car would be already insured (under the new continuous insurance dictatorship) or even their staff could not wreck use it as a runabout. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

Ford tried it with me, my car was brand new and had numerous problems followed by a missing factory option.
The first two fixes were 20min jobs that they did while I waited, the third took a day and I needed to go to work. They tried to say I was on my insurance but even though I had FC I didn't have other vehicles on the policy.
After a bit of grumping they went and found some special forms in the back office that had 1 day insurance on them and did it that way.
Can't guarantee they'd do it everywhere though. Thing is, it's up to them how they hire out their cars but it seems fair that you shouldn't go without either. Perhaps suggest to them that you'll hire a car and they can pay for it ____________________ current: ducati monster 750

Indeed, "other car" cover will be 3rd party only.
You could ask your insurer to switch cover to the courtesymobile for the duration, but then you'll likely get raped on admin charges.
To be fair (sorry) it's not entirely unreasonable as long as they're just covering their costs rather than turning a profit from it.

surely the argument of "my car should actually be working, as it's warranty issue / should have been sorted before sale why don't you bill Ford" should work?
never ever heard of anyone having to pay insurance on a courtesy car - we didn't have to pay on the hire car that the SEAT garage got for us to use while they fixed our car a little while back.
I know they don't 'have' to give out a courtesy car, but in the circumstances you hint at, they ought to ____________________ Looking to pass your CBT / Bike tests in Bury Lancashire? try www.focusridertraining.co.uk Would recommend.
