GT85 and WD40

I used to think there was no real difference between GT85 and WD40 lubricant sprays but I read (here on BCF, iirc) that the former doesn't perish rubbery and/or flexible plastic parts (carb boots etc.). If you use either of these do you have a preference for one over the other, and why? And can anyone please explain why one might be better if it gets on plastic / rubber parts? Cheers all.

WD40 is good for electrics and cleaning when you have nothing else
Penetrating oil is the good stuff for stuck bolts etc I use PlusGas
Grease is good for bolts, I always grease bolts up before putting them back, I used ACF50 grease
Copper slip is useful too for brakes etc although I don't have any
Then a good chain lube for the chain or ACF50 for anti-rusting, although that's expensive
Can of matt black engine paint for sorting the exhaust rust
Got some easy start too

We use GT85 at work instead on WD40. GT85 will go on and dry itself leaving a teflon coating. WD40 will go on and remain wet which attracts the dust and crap.

Although you can make better flame throwers with WD40

Some truth in that. But the smell of WD40 has changed over the years - and back in the '80s it was much better.

Anyway, I think I read on bcf somewhere that GT85 was 'synthetic' and thus didn't perish rubbery bits. Quite what that actually means I dunno.

I dunno! That's sort of why I started the thread. Perhaps it's more a case of "strictly speaking, there are solvents in WD40 that aren't in GT85 which with prolonged use i.e. when sprayed repeatedly on certain types of polymer and blah can be a bit more knackering." So basically don't worry. *is confuzzled*

I don't know if it's still the case but WD40 was petroleum based so over time might very well rot rubber.

I'd pick GT85 for cleaning electrics over WD40 all day but wouldn't use either as a penetrating fluid. I've still got a can of GT85 that I bought about 10 years ago - the stuff seems to last forever

If protecting electrics is your aim, then "White Grease" is what you need.
