does it have an engine on it?
if you're looking at flat slow moving water, you don't need a huge engine, a little pole motor (the kind sailing dinghies sometimes have as a back up) should do it.
Use it, see how it goes, map out the river, see if it's what you want.
Gives you a good idea if an 8ft is definitely what you want or if you'd want something even bigger.
