I don't want to get you upset, but maybe he couldn't see you, it's a quite long vehicle. Anyway, worse things happened to me, so any time I see a situation, like this I stand on the center line, or close to the line, so driver can see me and I can easily take off if he can't. I rather just take off, then using the horn, it's no use, most of car/truck drivers have the radio on and don't give a damn. Keep it safe Thumbs Up

That's what I did. Can't you see me peering round the side of the lorry. It might be difficult to make it out in the video but I could definitely see him in his mirror before he started rolling backwards, he just wasn't looking in his mirror at all. I left plenty of space behind him, if I hadn't he would have been over the bike, I got away from the lorry in time so I cannot see what you're implying I did wrong? If I had done something wrong then I wouldn't have got away unscathed.

EDIT: I've just watched it again and you can clearly see his mirror before he has even stopped. Rolling Eyes

I don't know if what you saw was different but from the video you are pretty much in his blind spot. Even if you did peer round it's gonna be pretty hard to see a helmet poking round the side of the lorry. He should have taken more care but for you it would also have been pretty easy to get out of his way and just carry on as soon as he started moving backwards as there was no oncoming traffic. I would have been much more central in the road by the time he stopped. That way he has more chance of seeing you and you have more chance of not getting squidged.

I was looking round the lorry but it wasn't like it was just my helmet poking around, theres the entire front of my bike with 2 headlights in front of me. I was watching him in the mirror and he wasn't looking in his mirror at all. It's a pretty narrow road and I was near the white line, if I was any further over to the right I would have been on the white line which I didn't think necessary as I just thought he was letting somebody through as he did a few metres before. There was no indication or reverse lights which made me think he was just waiting for someone because, as I said, it's a narrow road. I stayed well back though just in case.

If I had seen his reverse lights come on I would have gone around him quickly but because they didn't come on I didn't think he was reversing, just rolling backwards a little as if he was holding it on the clutch. So obviously to see him keep coming took me by surprise and I think I did pretty well to get out of there in time because he started coming back at a fair pace!

I was definitely not in his blind spot, unless his blind spot means clearly view of his mirror Rolling Eyes

The perception is always slightly different on a camera but you could see his mirrors so he should have seen you (if he'd been looking in them) and you didn't appear too close so another notch of experience and wisdom.......lorry drivers stop for no apparent reason & don't always look in their mirrors what a dick!

I know he might have had the radio on but even then I'd have thought he or his goon in the passenger seat should have heard all that revving and beeping.

And aren't you meant to have person guiding from behind for vehicles reversing over a certain size? Or is that just discretion of landowners/company policies and the like?

I know at the events I worked at over the summer and during the Olympics, anybody reversing anything bigger than a Transit Box-van had to have a guide (There's a proper word for it i think)

I thought lorries that size had to have mandatory backup cameras as well? I swear I remember reading that but can't find any mention of it anywhere. Either way, guy's a tit for not looking behind him.

Just to play devils advocate, those saying he's a dick for not checking his mirrors, how many people here can say they've glanced in their mirrors but missed something because they've not properly looked, or started riding from a stand still without doing lifesavers to check they're not going to clip a cyclist. Every single person here will have made a mistake to put someone else's life in danger, whether it be a pedestrian, or a passenger. So that makes us all dicks? Laughing

I would have overtook and shrugged it off. Not worth a full on rage, definitely not worth stopping. Maybe a quick beep and 'eyes on the road' gesture. Then again I wasn't there so it's easy for me to sit here and bash some keys Laughing

Thing is it wasn't that he just missed seeing MattJ in the mirror as they were driving along the road. The lorry driver stopped and then started reversing. Now I dunno about anyone else but isn't it a general intention to check both mirrors prior to reversing?? The fact that Matt was there, in view, when the lorry driver SHOULD have looked in his mirrors kind of speaks for the lorry drivers' stupidity.
