Going to go view a 94 ZXR 750 L on Thursday. It's done 42k miles and the owner wants £1200 for it with fresh MOT. Looks tidy, but won't know more until I go see it.

Anything in particular I should be looking for? Any known faults? If the bike is mint, is that a fair price?

Would appreciate advice on ZXR 750s in general, might be viewing another one as well. An earlier H1 model. 30K miles, £1000 with 12 months MOT. Again, what should I be paying for these?

A look at completed listing on eBay says they can go for anything from £600 to £900. But these are cosmetically tired. I see plenty advertised for £1500 but surely nobody is paying that.

If there is anything to learn from this forum, never buy a ZXR750 or GS500.

Was very tempted by one in Liscard, very close to Liverpool Laughing

GS 500...BLEH.

I reeeealy want the ZXR though! It's such a pretty bike. And will definitely be a classic one day.

My other choice is a F2 CBR 600 for the same price. Every single MOT since new and proper tidy apparently. Gonna go have a look on Wednesday.

The L model is the best ZXR but still eats valve collets and head gaskets. Still at least it's not restricted.

How would I go about checking for this?

£1200 could get you a very tidy Thundercat, equivalent of the CBR, just a little worse "quality" depends how much you care Laughing

What do you mean by worse "quality"?

I have no real preference between them. The Thundercat is maybe a little better looking. Really, if prices were equal, it would come down to which is cheaper on insurance and economy and easier to work on.

Well, the older CBRs had nice frames.

Easy to work on, had no issues on the Cat. Aside from plugs, ball...ache...

Well... If I came across these 2 bikes at £1200, I'd buy the CBR.

But if it was over.. that cat or...

I'd take the cat.

Personal preference and many here will disagree. But I actually preferred it.

How about this colour scheme? Laughing

https://i253.photobucket.com/albums/hh50/julietjameson/CBR600F2/600f2side.jpg

It's not the most desirable option, but if it's mega tidy, then might be an option. Would imagine they're more reliable than the ZXR?

And the the CBR is £50 cheaper a year on insurance. So unless the Thundercat has anything going for it apart from just looks over the CBR...difficult to swing it to the Yamaha.

In fact, the ZXR is cheaper to insure than the Thundercat for me Confused

Honda were baked to fuck.

But yeah, like I said, build quality, probably better on the Honda Thumbs Up

How old are you grandad Razz £175 for TPFT for me. That's with 2 years NCB, and I'm 23. Garaged and registered my parents' house in a nice neighbourhood. I'm assuming the insurance automatically becomes classic insurance due to age and I don't have to go hunting around specifically for classic insurance?

Steel framed CBR600's are great, just a bit dull.

However they have few vices other than rusty downpipes and reg / rec problems.

If you ride every day then I would choose the CBR over a ZXR, if you ride to enjoy yourself then the ZXR has more "soul" and is far more exciting.

I don't ride everyday, live close to uni, so no need. So mostly ride for fun/getting from Sheffield to home in Leicester. But, I do plan many tours around Europe on it, with the GF on the back. My ZZR6 was pretty much perfect for this and I imagine the CBR would be great as well. Whereas the ZXR probably won't be as comfortable. But as long as it's not excruciatingly painful, it's fine.

I managed to go from Leicester to Strasbourg in 24 hours on my ZZR. Absolutely no aches.

@ Paddy: I think Kawasaki did the balls to the wall trippy colours better than anyone else.

Bad times.
2 more years then you can get classic insurance.

Aaah right, I didn't realise you had to be a certain age to qualify for it, thought it was based just on the age of the vehicle.

For the CBR, how do I check if the reg/rec is on it's way out?

On a healthy bike the lights should get a little brighter when you rev the bike right?

Forgive my ignorance, I know very little about mechanics, but I know even less about electronics.

Ah, well, it only needed a lick of paint Embarassed But seriously, despite the state of it looks wise, that was with a 12 month tax and MOT on it.
