 |

Evening all,
I passed my test in the middle of January, since then I've done around 1,500 miles. However I'm not very confident when it comes to corners.
Does anyone have any tips? I also hate corners in the wet, is there anything different I need to do? I slow down more, and attempt to avoid drain covers etc.
Thanks . ____________________ Snow rider wrote: I'm far to annoying to be near for long periods of time |

Just wait for what little summer we have, then tip it in, and hope for the best.
Do not slow down! You can make that corner!

Might also be worth checking you have the suspension set up correctly for your weight and riding style. |

Get all your braking and speed adjustment done before you reach the corner/bend. Go through it on a neutral throttle (not slowing down, not speeding up) and gently roll the throttle on as you come out of it. Smoothness is the key.
Avoid drain/manhole covers, white lines and any other hazards but don't focus on the road surface at the corner - look through the corner to your exit. You should have the surface hazards sorted out before you're on them anyway. |

Good advice, but it's hard not to focus on the road surface pot holes. |

I reported a local pothole on a roundabout, est. 12ft long, 3ft wide, 1ft deep, a few weeks back.
They threw some crap in it that has gone all shiney and lumpy.
Very very lumpy and bumpy.
Reported that, a week later these appeared.

Fuck them in the face with more fucks.
Anyway, back to topic.
OP, watch this 3 times over the next week.

In addition to Islander's advice up there, take the corner in a gear which puts you in the middle of your usable rev range - if you need to adjust speed halfway round you have the chance of doing it with just your wrist, instead of gears/brakes. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. In slow out fast, and avoid potholes and drains and half a sandwich (I seriously avoided hitting one this morning like wuddafux) and those nasty little red berries made of what can only be described as gloop.
Stay shiny side up |

Slow down.
I've been having a bit of race training recently (cars not bikes but the principle is the same...). Confidence will come as you get better and faster, the way to do that is think about the 'components of speed' smoothness, consistency and correct input at the correct time.
Smoothness will come by initially slowing yourself down.
Consistency will come by thinking about what you're doing and practice.
The correct input at the correct time will be different for someone learning. Err on the side of caution... brake early, concentrate on the number of corrections you make in the turns and power on slightly late. As you get more confident and stop correcting in turns start to brake just a smidgeon later and power on a tiny bit earlier.
Also, do everything in straight lines - brake and change down. Power on once you're upright again. Braking and accelerating whilst turning is very advanced (especially on a bike).
Also, get out on some mini motos - it did wonders for me! ____________________ current: ducati monster 750

My problem is undercutting the white line when going onto side roads, something i've been working at in my training, if i'm not undercutting i'm swannecking
Got it now though I think, instructors advice was just to slow everything down and get all your signals etc in in good time, then you're not rushing ____________________ Fzr-600 1999 |

New bike on saturday though |
Ah, bastids. Best of luck gent, what's the new bike? |
XJ6, so I can do the full A if I need to, a paddy recommendation so I better not be disappointed
Anyway back to cornering, instructor guidance on long bends on NSL roads to me was:
For right hand bends hold to the left so you get a good view down the road
For left hand bends stay in the middle of your lane (not on the right on the white line as this puts you in danger)
Get your braking in before the turn and be in the right gear and speed for the turn, hold your speed, do not chop the throttle and if you need to adjust do it purely with the throttle, don't brake while leaned over and if you do need to emergency stop during a corner straighten yourself up as fast as you can before braking

Hopefully never, these big bikes are so much more grounded and stable and the training went a long way to showing where I derp (i'm erratic and rush constantly for no reason) ____________________ Fzr-600 1999 |

Before you blame yourself make sure the following are in order :-
Decent rubber
Tyre pressures
Shock absorber(s)
Forks and oil OK
Headstock bearing
wheel bearings not about to collapse.
Having said that all of the above on mine are fine and I still corner like a wounded tortoise. - But at least I know it's me and not the bike.

That was my issue too Alpha, rushed everything, think i've brought things down a peg or two now rushing wise but still catch myself doing it every now and then.
Bigger bikes are definately easier to ride than 125's though ____________________ Current: Honda City Fly CLR125 2003 Honda CB600F Hornet 2008 Yamaha FZ6 S2 + 1991 Kawasaki GPZ500
