The other day I thought I would be all responsible and check my tyre pressure... Wrong

For the whole designated 3minutes of air you get for 20p I was faffing around trying to position the hose thing onto my tyre valves, couldnt for the life of me work it out....

Do they fit?! Confused Neutral

Yes they do fit onto the valve. But I cant fit them to my bike. They simply don't go onto the wheel between the valve and center of the wheel. Go figure.

Yes, they fit.

You need to bend the valve to about 45 degrees and have the valve right at the bottom of the wheel, or whichever is easier for the hose and the fitting to have as straight a path as possible.

Alternatively, fit a 12V ciggy charger onto your bike, buy yourself a £20 digital tyre compressor and jobs a good un.

I leave my tyre compressor in my car boot. The hose is so much more flexible and compact, and you'd know full well that you'd have the same reading every time you fill up. You won't have the variability in measurements from pump to pump.

Forecourt tyre gauges take some knack to use though.

There are a lot of garages that the air line wont fit on bike's. Due to the disk brakes being in the way. I have a small compressor at home that you can run a spray gun off of. Do mine from that.

Footpumps are great and all that, but I'm lazy! 20 seconds on 12 volts or 2 mins of pumping? I know which one I'd take.

Silvs, I'd stick with standard plastic dust covers. If they're aluminum alloy, be prepared for them to sieze onto your valve what with the road salt and damp conditions. I hate galvanic corrosion with passion! Also puts impetus on you to check your tyres more frequently as part of regular maintenance!

Yes, work it out (don't have to push it on all the way, just get it the hose is on your valve) and THEN put the money in. Start with whichever of your tires is harder to get at.

Coming from someone who fits tyres, I much prefer manual pumps because a good one can be relied on. Would rather be knakered but get my tyre inflated than have a compressor die on me.

I don't use footpumps though as all the ones I've had broke. I use the bicycle track pumps.

Fit a what now?

Sorry, last I had a ciggy lighter was in my cars.... but I still use a 12v tyre compressor from the bike battery:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riUaqfneSes&feature=youtu.be

You'll have to imagine the battery is in the bike and the compressor is attached to the tyre

20p? You were lucky getting one that cheap, they're all 50p by me.

Bend the end part of the air pipe until it is at an angle where it fits.

It's pretty soft metal and bends easily enough by hand. The next biker will thank you and you won't prevent car drivers using it.

i always have problems getting the pump over my valves at petrol station machines, and my mini compressor at home has just died. grr

might look at getting a footpump though, how much they normally cost for a cheapish one i can rely on?

Around £20. Get a double barrel one. The difference between single and double barrel is huge. Oddly my best one was a Halfords home brand one.

Halfords https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_564321_langId_-1_categoryId_255241

Michelin https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_169794_langId_-1_categoryId_255241#tab3

Both have 4 stars. Keep a dab of oil on the moving parts and they should last an age.

My Halfords one has lasted 20 years of car, push bike, and motorbike tyre pumping. I have had odd spare ones to leave at work, the Wilkos one lasted a couple of weeks, broke on 4th use.

I always keep one of these in my pocket/bike tool kit. They have come in far more useful for others as I always check my tyre pressures immediately before I go out for a ride.If anything I slightly over-inflate my tyres the night before so that barometric/temperature variations overnight mean that I can let air out instead of scrabbling around for the foot pump in bike gear the next morning.

As for alloy valve caps seizing - if the pressures are checked often enough, why would they seize. In the years that I have been using alloy valve caps I have never had one seize where I might have had to use a pair of pliers to remove it.If anything, apply a smear of copaslip to the threads of the valve stem.

Another thing to take into consideration of forecourt compressors is the accuracy of the gauge.I have a Michelin electronic gauge which is accurate to +/- 0.5psi.So I use this to check the accuracy of my pencil gauge which I use on the bikes and keep in my bike tool kit.

I got the Michelin double-barrel for a tenner I think, on sale at Argos last year. It has attachments for my pushbike's skinny valves as well, and has an accurate pressure guage as checked with one of these.

As I have a motorbike only, I didn't see the point of the electric option.

I would put the air pipe kinda 'in' the wheel often - so behind discs etc, next to or between the spokes.

Take a look in your local Wilko (Wilkinson`s) store, they do a Ring brand 12v compressor for around £10, robust enough for this lot

Surely you mean These as used (in unbranded form) by Triumph, i think, either way they are one of those things that should be standard on all bikes.
