Been back commuting on 2 wheels the past week or so, and noticed that the front end was a bit unresponsive. "Must get the tyre pressures checked", thought I, and dug out the relevant info, 36psi front, 42 rear. Unfortunately, due to work etc, I didn't have time until this morning on this, my only day off in a run of 15 days on. I wasn't wrong. 24 front, 28 rear. No wonder it was handling like it was being ridden through sludge. The run home from the garage was wonderful, even took some twisty detours, just to make sure I wasn't imagining it. What a mahoosive difference.

I will now make a solemn promise, in the presence of the mighty nobcat, that I will forevermore keep on top of my tyre pressures. Ta. Thumbs Up

Yikes! I never used to check mine. Did once when the handling was super bad like yourself, pumped them up, and realised what a difference it made. Check the pressure roughly every 2 weeks now ^^ I start noticing it even when a couple of PSI out now.

Try 10psi! When I first passed my test the bike had been sitting for a few months, rode around for a few days with the bike strightening up in corners and all kinds of wierd things, you soon learn!

try to check mine at least once a week. Very Happy

Why do bikes have such high tire pressures compared to cars ? eg:
dug out the relevant info, 36psi front, 42 rear.

My Langster bicycle with Armadillo's used to need 80 - 100 psi. Now that took some work with the foot pump! ^^

I tend to have my Ribble at 100psi! Easy enough with a track pump...

When I first bought my Hornet I rode it round for a few days and thought the front end was a bit fruity to say the least. So I checked the tyre pressures only to find that the rear was spot on at 42psi but the front was inflated to 46psi instead of 36psi.

That explained that then. Laughing

You forget that time flies and you haven't checked pressures. I was away easter holiday in the cage. before that cant remember when last checked pressures. I got back on the bike and the front end felt heavy.

checked and it was 1.7 bar instead of 2.4. !.7 is for like riding in sand!

It'll be to do with the contact patch being smaller vs the weight it has to carry would be my guess - hence why racing bicycles with their tremendously thin tyres often have pressures of 100psi+.

Interesting, how do you normally check the pressures?

If I'm in a hurry I rely on the garage gauge to be accurate if its at home I use the old style pen gauge

How accurate are the digital gauges the old ones weren't so

Mine are always at the wrong pressure and I make sure they're kept that way. The pain of having a bike that sometimes takes a pillion. Neutral

Same goes for the suspension.

Good enough reason to get another bike with one seat and set how I like it. Smile

I managed to ride my CBR from Lincoln to Derby having unwittingly picked up a slow puncture.

It started to feel really wierd towards the end, so I got it home and discovered I had just 6psi in the rear.

How the fuck it managed to stay on the bead is beyond me.

Gotta hand it to the 2CTs, still didn't let me down.

I didn't check mine once before a trackday, the heat i put into the tyres caused the pressure to jump up to 50psi.
Then this happened

yep, I hung onto to it for a few meters but i was making the situation worse, The bike started to turn which could have then flipped and i could have ended up properly hurt.

I walked away from that unhurt and the crash bungs protected all of the expensive bits.
