Do you feel Thatcher's policies have helped you and your family ?
Not necessarily only in financial terms, but considering more opportunities in a wider sense.

Seeing as I wasn't around to experience it first-hand, to me it would seem silly to be pro/anti thatcher. It's like hating/loving someone just based off of mates descriptions rather than actually meeting them.

Pretty much everything she did would have been implemented by now anyway.

She had the balls to do it quickly to save us from the shitter.

The less fortunate members of society like to moan about something.

I dont think we are better off due to Thatcher. I'm a bottom feeder. I am a socialist, I live in a council flat and as a direct result of Thatcher selling off the housing stock without replenishing it I am stuck in a 2 bedroom council flat with 3 kids. We are over crowded and on the waiting list to be moved into a 3 bedroom house but we have been told it's unlikely to happen because they simply do not have the houses.

I think the majority of the country is agrees with most of the stuff she did.

The people that do not, shout the loudest though.

Also, I have noticed a lot of people my age going on and on about how awful she was when all they know about is the miners strike and what their parents tell them. Yet they express such a strong opinion against what she did.

At the time a lot of what she did appeared to make sense and it did give the UK the kick up the backside it needed.

What seems to be forgotten is that those who came after her, both Tory and Labour, moved the stuff she did to the next level and gold plated them; for which they don't appear to be getting the blame.

Possibly true, but you'd only have it 5 days out of 7 Wink

Personally, I agree with above that most of what she did was coming down the road anyway. But like ripping off a plaster, better to get it over and done with quickly.

Plus, she gave us another country apart from the French to have a go at Very Happy

Thing is about the strikes. The majority of power strikes, public transport strikes, waterboard strikes etc was because they were striking to keep the jobs Thatcher was getting rid of.

Now logic then tells you that if Thatcher was not trying to close those companies down and sell them off, there would be no strikes as they would not be needed.

that's not true, the unions had the country was in a strangglehold! she came in to help stop it!

she imposed a system where the union members had a right to vote on strikes rather than one 'little hitler' being in control of the whole thing. by and large people 'want to work' so they wouldn't vote for strike action. especially considering a lot of the time the reasoning for it was not worth it

it was the union leaders that ran the companies into the ground by not willing to compromise, effecting workers pay and lives whilst lining their own pockets.

she's blamed for their greed.

read up on skargills history.. welcome to communist britain. not a far shout from socialism to be fair..

Laughing Surely you jest? I presume you don't remember the three day week of 1974, and then there was the Winter of Discontent (1978/79) which was the reason that Thatcher got in in the first place.

It's a pity she could have foreseen the future and finished off Bob Crow before he turned into a wannabe Scargill.

He's one of the few relics insanely allowed to remain...

The whole issue with selling off public owned services is not that it should have never happened, It's that they should have been more closely watched.

Take a look at the railways. British Rail was shit. The trains were antiques, the whole infrastructure falling apart...

Privatisation could, and should have worked, but it allowed shit managers and shit companies in to make a quick buck on the back of Government subsidies.

We pay an over-inflated fare AND we pay through our taxes. Apart from poorly written contracts, there's no comeback. They are literally laughing all the way to the bank.

Now we're seeing exactly the same thing with the gas companies...

"Ohhh we've got to put prices up because the infrastructure needs updating..." Oh so the millions in PROFIT you've been making was just spunked on branding and company cars?!

People say Thatcher was a bitch, but I bet she wouldn't let them get away with it.

Lets consider for a moment, the other option the electorate was presented with:

Yes. A balding ginger Welsh bloke. Consider where we'd be today if he'd been in charge.

My dad was the best off he had ever been under Thatcher, as a driving instructor. Then he was able to buy the council house we were in, sell it, then onto a part buy / part rent then bought that, then sold it, bought another one then KAPOW!!!! sold that one at Ker-fucking-ching and bought a house now touching £500k.

He is a fan.

Having seen the other anti Thatcher posts and then the results of this poll I think you can see Thatcher's problem... Those who hated her did so loudly, those who didn't were a silent majority.

That worked for some people. Sadly the money made from the buying of the council house your dad bought never went towards replacing that council house that was now off the council housing stock.

That meant when it came to you needing to move out you found the council house you applied for was never built. This is the situation that faced millions of people. The next generation found themselves with 3 real choices. Stay with their parents, buy a house or rent privately. Each had drawbacks. Staying with parents, as we know, everyone wants their independence. Buying private, Not a chance, very few 18 year olds can afford, or could at the time, to buy a new house. This was before national min wage etc. Wages were shite. Renting privately. Still unavoidable today for a lot of people.

So they go to the local council to find out they have no houses available and they get put onto a waiting list. If you are a single guy or a couple with no kids you've got next to no chance of ever getting a place. If you have kids, or the other half is pregnant you have a better chance and even that becomes a minefield. If you intentionally make yourself homeless, eg walk out of mum and dads then you are not entitled to a house. If your family kick you out then you are entitled. It gets really complicated with a scoring system to see how bad your situation to find out where you stand on their list and its a fucking long list and you never get told where you are on it. Even the list changes with needs of others.

Even now, Councils are still selling houses to their tenants, and they are forced to accept a 30-50% discount. Which means it doesn't cover the cost of a replacement. Yet there are thousands within each authority who are on waiting lists. The news quoted something like a 7 year waiting list on average in the south of England.

I think it's fair to say that the right to buy has/had positive and negative results. As with most things in life.

Actually Pinky, you're prolly right about the housing, it was a bit of a cock up. But, does it deserve the kind of vitriol that's being spewed?

And, I'll just toss his in... Why should there be any social housing? It's a relatively modern idea, there isn't any tradition going back to the middle earth ages giving people the right to cheap housing.

She sold everything!

The problem with many of these debates is the inability to see the whole picture and be accurate with everything that happened not just pick the ones that support your argument.
