Hey guys, I've just upgraded my mobile to a S3, and am looking for a waterproof case to have on the bike so I can use the sat nav on it, is anyone running anything like this? if so how good is it?
cheers Smile

To be honest, I've always been happy with the 'Ultimate Addons' mounting point and case; I bought one for my HTC Desire, and it worked very well. I've since bought the case for my S3 (thanks to the mount being a universal fitting), although I've not had to use it in anger yet. The Desire one was just fine though, and resisted showers perfectly well. I didn't try it in torrential rain, purely because I'm not usually in an exploring mood when the rain's coming down that hard.

Don't RAM make the aquabox? It comes in various sizes, it would be worth investigating if the S3 fits one of them. As they are quite nicely built products.

Just taken my Z out of hibernation today and took the RAM mount off, not used it in about 2 years. Nowadays I have a smart phone, so I can always stop. But I prefer to carry a small UK map with me.

If I went abroad I might put it back on. But I have got used to writing directions on to white labels and sticking them to the tank

Ultimate Addons do a waterproof tough case now. I bought one for the iPhone, but I’m pretty sure they’ll have one for the S3.

It’s solidly built and an excellent fit for the iPhone, but…

…it makes it massive and nearly doubles the weight. It happened to be exactly what I wanted, but won’t suit everyone.

I also have the older soft case from Ultimate Addons which has done great service, but the hard case seems more water resistant and allows you to charge the iPhone while keeping it water tight. I still carry the soft case in my rucksack for mounting the phone if I need. The tough case lives at home and gets used for longer journeys and touring.

Not sure how big the S3 is but Givi do various waterproof holders such as the S950/S951/S952/S953 that fit GPS units and phones. Cost around the £40 mark.

The RAM aquabox large pro 20 that fits the S2 also fits the S3, just about. If you have any external protector on the S3, you'd need to take it off.

My GF has an S3 and it fits in. My Galaxy Nexus is a more comfortable fit though.

I've gone one of these which I've used on motorbike and push bike and am pretty happy with it, it should fit most modern phones (There's still a bit of space around my Sensation in there, but a Note 2 might be pushing it.)

It should fairly solid using the straps, but you could probably make something a bit better with a ram mount and some silicone if you wanted.
As it is, it's waterproof to 5m.

There's a waterproof case on ebay all over the show for bike sat navs, I got one a while ago, works a charm and only about £15, fits the S3 perfectly as I use it for mine

As per my post in pretty much any mounting thread ever:

Velcro tape on tacho. Velcro tape on phone.

If your phone isn't waterproof on its own you have the wrong phone. What if you need to ring someone when it's raining?

Job done.

For reference, here is a picture of the back of my Samsung Galaxy not-quite-an-S3:

https://i108.photobucket.com/albums/n39/mredgey/DSCF6765_zps7fa42f45.jpg

It makes the phone easier to grip as well. Tested to 100mph+. You can buy me a pint with the change. Laughing

I bought one of these:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/AK%C2%AE-Helm-Motorbike-Motorcycle-Waterproof/dp/B009RXVD48/ref=pd_sim_sbs_auto_1

It seems good but I haven't got around to trying it properly yet.

I fine it amazing how we have never met and have come up with exactly the same idea.

Mine is attached to a bike reflector cabled tied to the handlebars.

Tacho is kinda useful - wouldn't speedo be more relevant?

I can make calls in the rain with my non-waterproof phones just fine. That's a bit different to being able to survive periods held openly in sustained rain, as well as the risk of splashing from other vehicles etc.

I do use the velcro-on-the-back thing - but only in the car/van etc. While it's the adhesive that's failed before the velcro for me, I'd still be a bit worried that it could come off riding fast over bumps, landing wheelies or even in a crash (when it might be rather important to know where it is).

If the Xperia Z had Ant+, I'd probably get that as my next phone, as I do fancy the waterproofness. However, as it doesn't, I'll probably go for an S4 (which has other features I do want) and maybe consider seeing if I can get hold of a Xperia Active at some point - though, I'd prefer to have a 5' 1080p display for various GPS/mapping stuff given the choice.

Laughing

I've generally found that I can gauge revs from sound (and throttle response) accurately enough for most purposes.

Also, on my bike, if you stick the phone right in the centre of the dial, on the tacho you can still see the low and high rev range (i.e the redline).

On the speedo the first thing you can see is 100mph or something daft.

I've tried pulling mine off the velcro in various ways. You can't get it off without extreme force unless you pivot the phone. I reckon I could bin the bike and it'd still be on there, unless something physically impacted upon the handset.

On the rain front - mine's mostly shielded by the screen and it's basically a pane of glass.

I guess the worries are more legitimate with fancy phones. To be honest those worries are what make me not buy one. Razz
