today i had to collect an engine and other parts, so i thought id drive into town, then do my collecting on the way home. My usual scooter commute is 20 minutes or so, the car trip for same time of day was 90 minutes.

It was extremely unsatisfying.

It would have been quicker to have just scooted home and got the car out in the evening, does anybody else use a two wheeled conveyance simply to beat traffic?

By this i mean you do it year round to save time/fuel or are you an enthusiast or both?

All of the poll options.

I'm 19 with a fault accident against me. I haven't got enough lube to pay for car insurance. So there's the cheaper point.

I hate sitting in traffic for more than a few seconds. That really annoys me in cars and I fill with envy when a bike filters past.

Then finally I enjoy it.

Although if I could afford it... I'd probably commute in a car in all but nice weather. Then just take the bike out to play whenever I felt like it. Fair weather rider, probably, but what's wrong with just riding when you'll enjoy it rather than forcing yourself to do it more often? Laughing

I only ride for fun, TBH. I've avoided commuting where possible on the bike as it's not a lot of fun going up the city in rush hour regardless of weather - it's not what I bought a bike for.

Starting a new job next week away from London and will drive or ride. Cost between taking car or bike is pretty much pound for pound by the time you work out the expensive servicing and tyres on the bike and the fact it's not exactly extremely economical. If I commute on the bike then it's only going to come down to time saving but even then, it's not really much of a time saving by the time you've thrown your gear on and off at both ends and got changed into your work stuff. What it does do is gives you a more guaranteed time of arrival - ie when the traffic's really crap, your journey time only goes up slightly, versus hours and hours in the car.

A couple of years ago I had a week's work in another office up in the cotswolds. Took the bike for the week so wife could have the car whilst I was away - glad I did as on the way back the M25 was closed from M1 to M11. Absolute nightmare traffic, filtered my way all the way across the top of the M25 on the A414 and it added an hour or so to my overall journey time. One of the guys that was in the same office that week drove and lives 30 miles to the south of me - he took 10 hours - yes, 10 hours - to get home.

Took the car because it was damp and I don't want to clean the bike or get my new gloves wet Razz

but then my car is comfortable and relaxing and fairly nippy as is, took the bike yesterday

im pretty much in the same boat as you, i am also 19 and car insurance is a joke, even bike insurance is high (for me anyway)

But i think when i get a car it will only really be used in purring rain or icy roads, but for now i use bike all weather

I do it because its quicker. I don't enjoy commuting by bike and its certainly not cheaper than commuting in a small econobox but it slices huge chunks of time off, turning a 50 minute morning commute into a ~35 minute one.

When I say I don't enjoy it that's not strictly true. Good filtering makes me feel immensely smug, particularly if it is past my colleagues.

Like Jordan, Car insurance is ridiculous in price so I opt for the bike. I don't really need to commute to work since it's little over 15minutes walking, but I do it anyway and go for a quick blast and some aggressive filtering around town before I head in in the morning. Always leaves me feeling good to ride before work.

This, but not cheaper.

Live close to work. Never any traffic to filter through. Quicker to go by car by the time gear is on. Car more comfy, warmer when it's cold and can listen to radio etc.

Will use bike in the summer when it's warmer Laughing

I ride because I love riding and absolutely despise caging. Caging is the transport of last resort. I would rather ride in rain and cold than cage. I don't care if riding is more expensive than a small cage. Im going to ride bike until the day I cant swing a leg over.

I ride bikes because they are better than cars in pretty much every conceivable way (Contextual to the individual, but rings true for me).

Which ways is it contextually better for you then?

The usual arguments for cars are:
Arrow Passengers
Arrow Luggage
Arrow Warmth
Arrow Dry

My counter arguments (which are contextual to myself):
Arrow I never need to take passengers. In fact taking passengers in a car is a hindrance as people can "expect" a lift from someone with a car. A bike removes that expectation.
Arrow Sorry luggage what? I can carry 2 weeks worth of shopping for myself on the bike. I can also carry a weekends worth of festival equipment INCLUDING BEER. I can also take 2 weeks worth of life essentials home from uni. Sorry mr car driver? Cant carry luggage my fucking ring piece.
Arrow I have thermal clothing. The only part of me that get s slightly cold now is my hands, and if I bothered to shell out for some bar muffs, that would be eliminated also.
Arrow As per thermals: I have waterproofs also. Problem averted.

And then my mother of all kick in the bollocks to the car driver: When i'm commuting in the thick of london traffic, at rush hour on a manky monday morning: I'M STILL HAVING FUN.

That's cool, if it suits you then that's great.

For me, the thick of London traffic is a 30 minute train ride, on which I get a seat, can read my paper, wizz a few emails off on the blackberry, and then on way home it doesn't matter if I've been out for 4 pints at lunch. It also doesn't require me to get changed either end, to carry loads of gear around or stick them all at my desk somewhere all day, to turn up to work and need a shower on arrival, wear a crumpled shirt all day long, etc. So for me it's train - bike - car in that order of commuting into city.

Going out to a regional job next week I've got 90 miles of dual carriageway a day to tackle. TBH, if traffic is reasonably light there's no time saving in it whatsoever to take the bike as I'll be there in 50 minutes in the car, or 40 minutes on the bike but the hassle either end eats that up no bother. I'd still rather take the car, because the route is crap, and the car is an all year round solution.

It is horses for courses and I don't disagree with you at all - but contextually for me it wouldn't suit me to ride everywhere and I'm very glad I've got a car.

But you are still stuck in a cage, staring at the bumper of the cage in front and seeing the world from behind the glass of a metal and plastic cacoon.

Or on a train.

Breathing the exhalations and farts and sweat of who knows how many people.

No thanks. I would rather go by bike.

I tried that tube in London. Horrible. Crowded, chavvy, no one smiles, cooped up, underground with no air in my face....like being on a cattle truck. if I had to commute on public transport I would figure fark this, this isn't a life for a free white man.
