All of the poll options.
I'm 19 with a fault accident against me. I haven't got enough lube to pay for car insurance. So there's the cheaper point.
I hate sitting in traffic for more than a few seconds. That really annoys me in cars and I fill with envy when a bike filters past.
Then finally I enjoy it.
Although if I could afford it... I'd probably commute in a car in all but nice weather. Then just take the bike out to play whenever I felt like it. Fair weather rider, probably, but what's wrong with just riding when you'll enjoy it rather than forcing yourself to do it more often? ____________________ 2004 R1 & 2018 XSR900 |

im pretty much in the same boat as you, i am also 19 and car insurance is a joke, even bike insurance is high (for me anyway)
But i think when i get a car it will only really be used in purring rain or icy roads, but for now i use bike all weather ____________________ owned bikes: DR50, Thumpsta 110 , Honda CR85, Speedfight 100, Yamaha XT125X, Honda CRF450, Honda Hornet '07

I do it because its quicker. I don't enjoy commuting by bike and its certainly not cheaper than commuting in a small econobox but it slices huge chunks of time off, turning a 50 minute morning commute into a ~35 minute one.
When I say I don't enjoy it that's not strictly true. Good filtering makes me feel immensely smug, particularly if it is past my colleagues. ____________________ Triumph Daytona 675 track bike + girlfriend's Honda Hornet 600

That's cool, if it suits you then that's great.
For me, the thick of London traffic is a 30 minute train ride, on which I get a seat, can read my paper, wizz a few emails off on the blackberry, and then on way home it doesn't matter if I've been out for 4 pints at lunch. It also doesn't require me to get changed either end, to carry loads of gear around or stick them all at my desk somewhere all day, to turn up to work and need a shower on arrival, wear a crumpled shirt all day long, etc. So for me it's train - bike - car in that order of commuting into city.
Going out to a regional job next week I've got 90 miles of dual carriageway a day to tackle. TBH, if traffic is reasonably light there's no time saving in it whatsoever to take the bike as I'll be there in 50 minutes in the car, or 40 minutes on the bike but the hassle either end eats that up no bother. I'd still rather take the car, because the route is crap, and the car is an all year round solution.
It is horses for courses and I don't disagree with you at all - but contextually for me it wouldn't suit me to ride everywhere and I'm very glad I've got a car. |

But you are still stuck in a cage, staring at the bumper of the cage in front and seeing the world from behind the glass of a metal and plastic cacoon.
Or on a train.
Breathing the exhalations and farts and sweat of who knows how many people.
No thanks. I would rather go by bike.
I tried that tube in London. Horrible. Crowded, chavvy, no one smiles, cooped up, underground with no air in my face....like being on a cattle truck. if I had to commute on public transport I would figure fark this, this isn't a life for a free white man. ____________________ 2011 KTM 990 Dakar
