Limit of £2000 tops for a new (second hand) bike

i like the 500 twins but open too suggestions! (not goose 350 Rolling Eyes

)

My postcode is DL6 2RG and dont want to travel much more than 60 miles

I have been trawling ebay, MCN, Bike trader and cannot find much, any links guys? Very Happy

Well from a quick poke on Auto Trader I've found a nice little R Reg GPZ500S for £1395, with 20,000 miles on it, the link is here

Quite cheap and not too far from you.

Also spotted a GS500 for the same price here

Not interested in a 400 sports as i am 6ft 4 and would look silly on one and i only have a full bike licence not a car licence so i use it every day!

SV650's, er-5, GS500, Honda CB500 , GPz 500

those are the bikes that tickle my fancy!

I think a SV650 is the best choice out of the ones you have said Modern , easy to ride , comfortable and enough power. Thumbs Up

My youngest brother had an SV650s, and when some (amateur) thieving tw@ took the ignition barrel out of my Triumph I had to borrow it for a couple of days. It was an absolute fecking riot to ride, just couldn't stop grinning. The engine is fantastic, not at all frightening, but loads of kick right where you need it most. His had fairing lowers, and this really tidied it up. It had an Art can with a stage one dynojet and it sounded truly awesome. The front end was maybe a little soft when pushed properly, but this could have been down to tired springs, or the fact that I'm used to a very stiff set up on my bike, or the fact that I'm a heavy bast&rd. It was just a really confidence inspiring bike, the handling was predictable without being slow to turn, and it just seemed to do exactly as it was told. Thumbs Up

There are a couple of ER5s in the scooter shop my other half works in at the moment. One is fairly new & he wants £3k for it, the other is not so new but an absolute minter & it's up for £1700.

Warrington is probably a bit far away (110 miles according to routemaster) but it's a nice ride over the M62!

Dodsi, why not bandit or fazer?

I'm sure the SV is great, but I used an er-5 for my DAS and thought it was awsome. Albeit a 500 fairly assinine commuter, it had a really nice twinny grunt to it mid-range. GS500 IMHO lacked build quality and the engine felt really light and tiny - however, it is a revvier engine than the er or CB, so if you wanna do the hooli stuff it might not be a bad option.

Edit: Sorry, just read first post - you like the 500 twins and need restriction. If you can't afford SV, I would go for the er 5 of those you suggested

i can afford an SV 650 (just)

but dont know if a ER-5 is the more "sensible" option for a first bike?

If you were to say buy a 15 year old ducati instead of an er-5, then that might not be "sensible", but an SV is an established model, and it will do more than an er-5

Could you take an er-5 to a track? Well, you COULD, but . . . etc.

Remember, something can be sensible without being boring. And sensible does not have to mean boring. And just because one thing is more boring than another, doesn't mean the thing that is less boring is also less sensible.

If you like the SV, get it. But if you prefer the er, then get that - don't judge it on how sensible, but on how much you want it. IMHO

SV650 (s) insurance is £229.75 (£600 excess) TPFT for a 19 year old with 1 years no claims

ER-5 is £262.96 tpft (£400 excess)
