Numberplates - Talk to me!

Hi all,

I'm after a new numberplate for the Monkey as the last one had a hole burnt through from the exhaust as well as other various holes drilled in for L's and such.

Anyway, I've seen these metal plates, yellow with black lettering. If they are the correct size, are they legal???? If not, I'm thinking of getting a standard plate with a slogan. Anyone know a cheap place for these??

Trying to come up with a slogan, all I can think of size related is "Size doesn't matter (I hope!)". Anyone got any ideas?

A pressed metal plate won't be legal, it won't have the correct reflective standard therefore won't have the BS markings even if it was legal font.
Can't see it being a problem day to day or a "routine" stop but if you get pulled in for a proper vehicle check you'd meet someone who knew what was what and could get done. Same goes for a slogan, you legally can't have one. The choice is yours

I looked into it a while back. Black and white pressed plates are legal for pre-'60s-ish vehicles (might have been '73, maybe?). Black and yellow ones are legal if they were originally fitted before about 1987 or so, as I remember. Think that was from reading some bits of Acts, can't give exact sources 'fraid.

But of course, the law's not straightforward, there might be more recent legislation that requires that all plates are retroreflective bar black/white ones for vintage things, IANAL, etc.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure slogans aren't allowed, if you really want to be legal. Allowed a garage name, I'm pretty sure, and required to have the address of the place that produced the plate, at least for new ones.

You can buy '100% legal' pressed metal plates. They're reflective, have the correct sizes, spacing and font, the makers name / postcode, and the BS number.

A cop can still do you for them.. They've been a grey area for years tbh

You are mainly looking at Schedule 2. In that it states about BS AU 145a which I have attached.
