Does anyone know the law regarding this?

I have recently got a wee puppy and thinking about selling the car, so I was wondering if it would be possible (in a few months or years time) to take a dog on a bike.

Would it need a special doggy helmet?

Or would I need to put in a pannier box?

I once remember seeing something on TV years ago where someone was trailing a barrel with wheels and had a dog inside that - however he got stopped by the police because the barrel was not legal - but I cannot remember if the police had any issues with him having a dog.

Can anyone shed some light on this matter?

Heine Gericke used to stock carriers for small dogs, like a top box to put a dog into.

Personally, I'd really only put a dog in a side car.

Perfectly legal as long as the dog is restrained and is not trapped inside some kind of pannier or box but do not be surprised if you get pulled over by the police or get complaints of cruelty from others. I took my dog in my combination for many years which was fully enclosed so only got pulled a few times by the police after motorist saw the dog in the sidecar.

Personally wouldn't risk it unless trained but think lone wolf would be one of the best people to ask/answer. I've read about his beautiful dog on his website.

I remember one of this police clip shows where they (the programme makers) criticised a biker for towing a dog in a trailer, and issued a retraction next episode and said it was legal.

Stopped for a cooling beer in the main square, Mons, Belgium. Lots of bikes parked around, then a cruiser pulled up, rider in full gay leather gear, but big as a house so no comments made. From a tank bag emerged the fluffiest little white poodle you could imagine. Dog was quite happy to wander around a bit, have a pee, then follow master on his way.
So wrong on so many scores, but they were both perfectly happy with their life so whose to judge?
