When I used to work on a kiosk I found it was annoying to ask for ID some times but didn't fancy getting sacked or a criminal record so took the abuse anyway It's a lose-lose situation, get abuse from customer for asking for ID or get sacked & arrested for selling to under aged people. The silliest thing I ID'd someone for was plastic knives and forks... Personally didn't like looking at peoples ugly mug shots when dealing with big queues all day, better things to do and all that. ____________________ KTM 990 SMT & Suzuki DR-Z 400 SM |

I actually find being ID'd a compliment these days.

Rubbish. I've never seen any shop do this ever. Anyway, if they tried to start taking notes off my ID, I'd soon put a stop to that and if they are not taking notes off the ID, what would they be writing down?
9:55: Checked an ID

I don't think so somehow. |
Our trading standards mongs wanted us to get all the staff to record every single time they asked someone for ID, what the customer wanted to buy, age, sex and a description of the customer. Oh and the time, date, person asking for ID, if a manager was informed and the other half of War and Peace (at the moment we just record refusals). I asked the trading standards mongs to point out the statute that requires us to record every single occasion someone is asked for ID.
My question was met with bluster, blunder and quoting of policy and procedure and best practice. but nothing in law compelling us to do so. So we won't, but I expect plenty of spineless yes merchants will. |

What offence are you committing unless you actually sell to an underage punter? Does "due diligence" even constitute a defence to that?
As Joncrete says, the HSE and other assorted quango-muffins have a raging hard on for inventing regulations with no force behind them other than fear of some nebulous penalty that someone's cousin's friend swore they heard being handed out at the Spar in Torquay in 1983. I do wish more folk would tell them to either prosecute or sod off. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Personally I'm not prepared to risk a job, or the reputation of a company on it, maybe you are?
Trading standards may well also ask to see evidence of procedures you have in place to capture under age sales. Or evidence of due diligence. Usually this'll only be after a trading standards spy has got something, or they've been tipped off. Your refusals book/IDing book, your till system and any relevant training given to employees could form part of this.
TBH, although I moan about it myself, it is a free market, so people can shop with whomever they please. If you've got a problem with the ID policy in one shop, then go to another. It does amuse me how many people complain about the ID policy in Tescos, yet they're still the largest supermarket in the UK.
Which shop are you more likely to throw the book at after a someone under age has bought something. They shop that all the due diligence under the sun to back up that's it's a genuine error, or the one that kicks off and has nothing to back up their claims that it was a one off, honest guv. ____________________ My Flickr |
