A lot of tills are automated these days, probably came up think 25 on the screen so they did.

It's their job/fine at risk if they don't do it.

I agree, but you can hardly have a go at someone for protecting their job.

When I used to work on a kiosk I found it was annoying to ask for ID some times but didn't fancy getting sacked or a criminal record so took the abuse anyway Thumbs Down It's a lose-lose situation, get abuse from customer for asking for ID or get sacked & arrested for selling to under aged people. The silliest thing I ID'd someone for was plastic knives and forks... Laughing Personally didn't like looking at peoples ugly mug shots when dealing with big queues all day, better things to do and all that.

I actually find being ID'd a compliment these days.

But every time they ask they have to record it in an incident type book. This was reason enough for me to use my good judgement when I used to work behind a bar or in a shop

Rubbish. I've never seen any shop do this ever. Anyway, if they tried to start taking notes off my ID, I'd soon put a stop to that and if they are not taking notes off the ID, what would they be writing down?

9:55: Checked an ID
10:03: Checked an ID
10:14: checked an ID

I don't think so somehow.

I was ID'd today buying superglue from poundland, there's a warning on the back of the pack that says it's not for sale for under 21's...

So I left and bought a tin of Evostik from the shop around the corner.

Again, depends on the company. No legal requirement to show you've checked ID, but you have to show "Due Diligence".

Thus, a record of ID checks made and any refusals would form part of your due diligence. IME you keep a record of any refusals made, and under which grounds.

Our trading standards mongs wanted us to get all the staff to record every single time they asked someone for ID, what the customer wanted to buy, age, sex and a description of the customer. Oh and the time, date, person asking for ID, if a manager was informed and the other half of War and Peace (at the moment we just record refusals). I asked the trading standards mongs to point out the statute that requires us to record every single occasion someone is asked for ID.

My question was met with bluster, blunder and quoting of policy and procedure and best practice. Rolling Eyes but nothing in law compelling us to do so. So we won't, but I expect plenty of spineless yes merchants will.

The statement I was responding to indicated that all retailers have to do this. They do not.

Also, due diligence ends at asking for ID, as its then up to the council to prove you aren't asking. That's not to say that companies don't do it as an extra layer of protection, but if they do, its called arse covering, not due diligence.

How are you then going to prove your due diligence if you don't keep a record of either asking for ID, or the refusals you've made?

What offence are you committing unless you actually sell to an underage punter? Does "due diligence" even constitute a defence to that?

As Joncrete says, the HSE and other assorted quango-muffins have a raging hard on for inventing regulations with no force behind them other than fear of some nebulous penalty that someone's cousin's friend swore they heard being handed out at the Spar in Torquay in 1983. I do wish more folk would tell them to either prosecute or sod off.

Not making a fuss about the bird doing her job, just wondering why I need to be 18 for it, yet can buy petrol at 16.. A much more dangerous substance in my opinion

Personally I'm not prepared to risk a job, or the reputation of a company on it, maybe you are?

Trading standards may well also ask to see evidence of procedures you have in place to capture under age sales. Or evidence of due diligence. Usually this'll only be after a trading standards spy has got something, or they've been tipped off. Your refusals book/IDing book, your till system and any relevant training given to employees could form part of this.

TBH, although I moan about it myself, it is a free market, so people can shop with whomever they please. If you've got a problem with the ID policy in one shop, then go to another. It does amuse me how many people complain about the ID policy in Tescos, yet they're still the largest supermarket in the UK.

Which shop are you more likely to throw the book at after a someone under age has bought something. They shop that all the due diligence under the sun to back up that's it's a genuine error, or the one that kicks off and has nothing to back up their claims that it was a one off, honest guv.
