 |
|
Little git takes after me, he'd rather invest his time playing on the computer and using his imagination than waste it dealing with you dumb humans.
But he's into Stronghold (I and II) at the moment, so today I dragged him off to the local castle, stropping all the way. They had a box of dressing up gear in one of the rooms, and he got archered up.
So I offered to make him a bow, and after the usual pondering, he's eventually agreed and is quite into the idea now.
Jazzed up doesn't quite cover it. I haven't done one for years, so it's off to B&Q to find the least roasted of their kiln dried hardwood, shave down one of mine, or start with one of my precious seasoned ash staves.
Either way, +infinity man and dad points. Double infinity if someone loses an eye.
How's your Sunday shaping up? ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Pretty cool, would like to see the how 2 thread, for me tomorrow is taking a dry run to where I think I'm having my interview on Monday at 10am. I say think as the website directs you to a completely different post code than the one that is listed. ____________________ CB125>CG125>GN125>ER5>K100RS>R1100RS>K100RS

9, so too old to begin the training.
It should man him up a bit though, knock some of that "You're all winners just for showing up" brainwashing out of him.
Build is simple, you take a stick and cut away anything that doesn't look like a bow. Rough nocks on early, draw it up verrry gradually and shave away as necessary to get a nice bend. A spokeshave or draw knife is nice, but I've done an ad-hoc one from a broken ash spear shaft using a thin bladed mild steel knife.
You can make a shootable bow from most woods[*]. The problem is getting wood that hasn't been fast grown and baked too dry in a kiln. Proper air dried wood needs sought out. I've done ash, oak and beech but my first ones were just generic B&Q hardwood, mahogany or similar. I had a couple of those de-laminate pretty spectacularly when fully drawn, but the others were surprisingly OK and I've kept those while passing on the "proper" ones.
TBH, I might just shave one of those down, since I know they're good. I don't enjoy the awful moment when you put the full draw on, hear a little "crick" as something gives, and you've got a piece of firewood.
[*] Pine doesn't work though, IME, it's got too much resin, which oozes out and cracks the wood up a treat. I've heard tell that you can "water dry" resinous woods by immersing them in running water which eventually replaces the resin, then you air dry them out. I don't know of anyone who produces wood like that though. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Awesome! My dad made me a bow when I was younger. We had a Yew tree in our back garden so it had added historical accuracy! See if you can find a Yew tree to make a real longbow (takes a hell of an effort to pull the string though!)

I think he'll enjoy this Roger.
I'm a County coach and coached my youngest from age 11 to becoming a member of the GBR junior recurve squad (olympic-style bows) at age 16.
Youngsters can do archery from very young if the draw-weight of the bow is low enough and are taught good form.
My own classes have taken kids from age 7 and up. ____________________ 22PlusY

The draw weight is a bit too much for him, but he insisted on keeping it there. Since that's stupidly manly of him, I had to support his choice. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Well, I do quite like what you are doing here as it is something that I used to do with my Grandad, make bow and arrows, traps etc so it is nice to see someone taking the time to do stuff like this, though more points would have been awarded if you went out to the woods and got your wood there, I still have my knife my grandad bought me, probably illegal now.
That said, yesterday I was drinking a Mojito at the top of the mast (40footish) on a boat, on the water whilst blowing a good force 4, and before anyone thinks that it was irresponsible to be drunk at the top of the mast, whilst drinking another bottle of Mojito and taking pictures, safety was always key which is why we made sure that my Mojito bottle was tethered to me and my harness at all times and the camera had a wrist strap ____________________ Stinkwheel: You have no right to free speech

I'd not even have considered kiln dried timber for a bow of any description, I'd have thought you would simply get caught in the face by the cloud of splinters as the thing flechetted out of your hands at full anchor
I came so close to buying a stash of 1940s carpenters tools to clean up recently, mainly for the array of spokeshaves it contained
Nice job ____________________ I'm immortal. Well, so far. |

I was very surprised. I did my first four in best B&Q mahogany (or reasonable facsimile) as a learning exercise. Two did disintegrate pretty spectacularly in my face, two came out as reasonable bows which have been shooting for 15+ years, one of them now in a truncated Next Generation fashion.
On knives, it's more technically correct - the best kind of correct - to say that most offensive weapons legislation has a specific exemption for folding pocket knives with cutting edges not exceeding 3"/75mm. Anything locked or fixed like a sheath knife is fair game for a day in court, where you can try your defence of "lawful authority or reasonable excuse".
Be aware that people can be and have been arrested for carrying credit card sized blades in the wrong place (Eurostar, IIRC).
