So I understand that wind screens are useful to stop you being battered by the wind, but I'm not sure it will help my problem.

I wear a contact lense in one eye and so even a tiny bit of wind in my helmet can make it pretty uncomfortable. I've tried to readjust my helmet but the wind still seems to get into the helmet and into my eyes (it's a full face). My question is whether or not the wind would still find a way into the helmet if I had a wind screen installed onto the bike?

Or does anyone know of any tips that would reduce the wind? I'm going to try wear a neck scarf next time I go for a ride and see if that makes a difference, but I'm not sure it will.

If it makes any difference it's a YBR 125.

Thanks.

I'm not sure about the windscreen to be honest, but I can highly recommend trying out the cheaper option first - the neck scarf. I bought me and Mr Yaigi a black wool circle scarf from H&M last year for a out £2 each in the sale. The difference they make is amazing - reduces wind noise really well, so would imagine would help you too. Very similar to this one from Amazon:

Only if it was enormous, the purpose of the screens you see on bikes is to reduce the wind blast on your body at higher speeds.
Usually there's some negative side effect like more buffeting and bad handling in cross winds or when passing large vehicles.

Cheers for your reply. That does seem like a good option. Do you find it uncomfortable to wear in the summer, though?

OK... so the problem is wind in your hat.

I doubt a small bug screen would make much difference, if any, or that it would be a beneficial one, if it did.

You tend to get more turbulance around accessory screen edges, they wont deflect wind over the top of you or sheild you much, and most likely to deflect more wind at your head, probably where you least want it.

Bigger, barn-door screens.... well, if you have to look through them.... then by C&U regs they have to have windscreen wipers! Which means they would have to be glass, and effoff heavy or the perspex would scratch... so even the big-uns, don't sheild your head, they are low enough to look over the top, and you will have turbulance round the edge again.

So I dont think that a screen suggests itself very well as solution to problem posed; and if there is an off the shelf to buy answer, it's likely to lie in a 'better' (more expensive) better fitting crash hat.

So lets start with the basics.
1 - Does your hat fit you properly?
2 - Is it done up properly?
3 - Is wind getting in through un-necessary gaps? Are you using visor / vent mechanisms 'appropriately'.
4 - Is the helmet defective, or simply a cheap crappy lid? Is it the wrong type of lid? (full Face MX hat for eg)
5 - And this is the biggie...... How do you 'sit' on the bike?
Are you comfy? Have you adjusted the and foot controls to the most comfortable angles? (They are adjustable you know!) Are you sitting up bolt upright, chin up, or leaning into the wind forehead down? Are you actually sitting 'straight' not slightly sideways on the seat or anything. Do you sit towards the tank on the seat or towards the tail?

Changing how you sit on the bike and the angle you hold your head into wind blast can make a huge difference to how noisy it is, how much wind turbulance you get around it and or in it.

This is worth playing with to see what effect / changes you get.

But, first you need to look and make sure that you know what vents you have, and the difference opening or closing them has; it COULD be a really stupid thing, like a forhead vent being open and you dont know you can close it!

And following the scarf suggestion;

- have you tried a helmet liner? Thin balaclava protects helmet lining from greasy hair, and is easily washable; while also offering a bit of baffling inside the hat, that may do the trick.

- If scarf around the neck opening offers some benefit, you can buy accessory helmet skirts, that zip up around the kneck and tuck inside collar of your jacket, to block out wind.

- Some helemets come with, or you can some-times buy as an accessory, skirted chin-pieces that deflect wind away from the helmet's kneck opening..... or nose pieces to deflect breath down at vents... maybe one of those cylists monkey-masks might offer some benefit, I dont know.

In days of yore, when even a ratchet visor mechanism was a luxuary, we used to improvise with gaffer tape and brown paper..... especially at the track in the wet.... taping visors shut to get a good seal, or making little deflectors around the chin-piece, or even... taping over a rider's nose to the chin-piece so thier breath went down not up!

So, plenty of stuff to have a think about, have a mess and a play, find what works for you.... BUT a good helmet that fits properly is, for stuff like this a WONDERFUL thing, and where they are worth the money. Its little destracting irritants like this that make the difference to how safe you are and how much fun you have. Its like having a stone in your shoe... you dont watch where you are going if every step you are incing in anticipation of the discomfort, and being uncomfortable ent fun!

Use glasses maybe? Or wear some goggles under your helmet?

Kroops are ok when I use an open face, as are G techs kroops are flexible though while Gtechs aren't.

I dislike wind blast and have fitted or extended a screen on every bike.

However, for your specific purpose I'd suggest that you try a helmet skirt.

They come in various forms, from neoprene ones where it's like shoving your head back up the birth canal, to flappy ones that velcro closed.

The common theme is that they form a seal round the edge of the helmet and so have a fighting chance to divert or slow down airflow.

I personally like the Stopwind Deluxe, but it's going to be a subjective thing.

I have soft and RGP, RGP are terrible for wind, so i just keep visor shut

I wear contact lenses too and understand your issue. I had a YBR just like you...I also now have a CBR which has a windscreen and I can tell you, It makes not a jot of difference to wind hitting your face.

One thing that did help was buying a helmet that had a chin curtain....that stopped a bit of the wind circulating round my helmet...unfortunately though youll never completely stop it. A helmet with an internal drop down sunvisor may also help a little.

Also make sure your helmet vents are closed.

Oxford Snood,

I use one and find it's great at stopping wind in your helmet.

You could try glasses or goggles as a fix. Screens do help but you'd need a really big screen to completely remove the wind from your helmet, or tuck right in all of the time.

Or... you could turn pirate and wear an eye patch whilst riding Mr. Green

A couple of summer weight buffs will stop the wind whistling up past your chin. Closing the vents on your lid will also help, but will probably cause visor misting.
In which case fit a pinlock and/or get a lid where the visor can be clicked shut.

I had a Z1000R2 the Eddie Lawson replica... I removed the bikini fairing for a short while and could not believe the difference a small screen made to the wind blast and buffeting.....
