You don't intend to ride one AT THE MOMENT!
Peoples choices change.
Kingsknight said he would never ever want a bike bigger than his beloved 125 Varadero, till he rode one. Now he's after a 650. ____________________ Triumph Trophy Launch Edition |

No it doesn't.
DSA test requirements state the specification of machine required to take tests on. How you furnish such a machine for test is entirely up to you.
There is absolutley no mandation to do any lessons, nor use a school to provide the machine... though it is usually a convenience.
Meanwhile, you are taking a test for one of the three licence criteria, that allow you to ride machines up to specificational limits.
Just becouse you dont wish to ride anything more than something in between two groups, is pretty irrelevent; qualification allows you to ride up to that of test machine, and its fairly reasonable you should prove you can do that. |
No it's not irrelevant, I only want to ride a 250 so why should I have to ride a 500 to prove I can ride a 250? It might be that I would be able to handle a 500 and it's not a problem, the problems just in my head, but I can't ride a 500 on the roads to find out without paying for lessons. Surely I can't just go and take my test without any experience other than a 125?
Age is not an issue because I'm 35 but I don't think that alters anything though.
| Quote: | The 250 sector is dead, it just doesn't know it yet. You'll have to pass on a GS500 or even an NC700S to get a license to ride one. Very few people are going to step back down to a 250 after doing that. |
That could be so but I doubt it and anyway I only have physical space for a small bike in the bike hut I have on the back.
The position I'm in is that I'm riding around quite happy on my 125 on CBT but obviously that runs out and I might as well take my test and be done with the L plates for good. After that a 250 is just about perfect for me all round. I just don't see why I should be forced into taking the test on a 500, which in turn forces me to pay a riding school for the experience of riding that prior to the test. It just sounds like a money making con to me. On the other hand I might be able to jump straight onto a 500 from my 125 with no problems at all, however I'll never know. |

pay for an hours lesson on a ER500 or GS or something then come back and say that you only ever want to ride a 250. ____________________ Current : '08 Yamaha FZ1s

Why not do a lesson on a 500 and then see how you feel, it isn't a huge machine but is is a proper big bike with all the advantages that entails, better handling, brakes, suspension and comfort, and a vast number of good used bikes to choose from. A 250 on the other hand will be a feeble 125 frame with a bigger engine plonked in, assuming you can find one.
There's a whole lot more to big bikes than just performance and you have to ride one to appreciate that. ____________________ They're coming to take me away, ho-ho, hee-hee, ha-haaa, hey-hey,

Good Godd, Man!
You have for however long been utilising the PRIVILIDGE of using a motor-vehicle you have NO qualification to use on the public road, on provisional entitlement of your licence, that is offered so that you might practice for the tests, unsupervised....
And you are loath to pay for fucking lessons for anything?!?!?!?!?
If it were not for the unsupervised 125 Laws, mate, you wouldn't be riding FUCK ALL, without paying for lessons and a test before hand!
Bikes, ironically the most dangerous means of motor transport on the road, the ONLY one you are allowed to ride unsupervised without taking a test to prove your competence. every other bugger has to have lessons to drive a car, or HGV or whatever.... and you moan!
Count your bludy blessings!
Bike test is bike test; rules is rules, like-em, lump em, your choice; but f'f'sake! Talk about the whingy whiney me mind-set! ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

I'm just ignoring the aggressively OTT replies, thanks anyway...

Yes that's probably the best idea. It would give me a feel for the bike, I didn't realise that you get better handling and brakes etc on them as well.
I had in mind something like this originally:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130895020764?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
This is not far away from my sr125 which I like and suits me to the ground, only the 125 doesn't have the kick past 40mph that the 250 probably would have and anything much, much bigger and faster doesn't have any appeal to me. |
