 |
|
Hi guys I was just looking for some advise I'm just getting into racing and I have a 2000 R6 standard road bike. I was going to enter the pre injected 600's (which they do at Knock hill) then buy a new fairing and change the sprocket. Just wondering if you thought this was a good class for a beginner and if you think any other bike mods would be an idea. (brakes/tyres/suspension are all new and set).

Converting a road bike to race spec is the most expensive way to go about this.
You are better off selling your road bike in road trim and buying a track-ready version of the same bike.
Making figures up here, your road bike is worth say £2000. A 'sorted' track bike the same will sell for £1800 with some spare race bits and bobs.
So you have +£200 to go into the race pot!
To do it the other way means strip your bike, upgrade the suspension, get a set of 'wets', sprockets, rearsets, race farings, clip-ons ... talking over a grand there for sure ... so you would be -£1000 in the race pot! ... which option do you think is 'better'
Oh and don't be fooled into thinking a pre-injection won't be fiercely contended.

blue is talking sense, but chipping at parts sometimes seems alot easier when you already have a bike.
But there are plenty of classes to choose from, thunderbikes at bemsee, golden era at thundersport, then you have a PI class at Derby phoenix, then roadstock and streetstock classes at EMRA and NGRCC.
And yeah its a good class to get into but not really novice friendly as all the newcomer and novice classes outhere allow new bikes so you will get beaten by the latest and greatest stuff which can be frustrating when you get closer to the front. ____________________ Dean Stone #777

Agree with both of the above, I converted my ZX6R 2000 model from road to track, it cost me a fair bit and I’m never going to make the money back. I decided to go that route as I chucked it at the scenery at Mallory with all the road trim on last summer so chucked a cheap set of fibreglass race fairings on at the time. When I decided to start racing the amount I would get for the ZX (as it now had a crap gel coated fairing and a few war wounds) wouldn’t give me enough to get anything substantially better due to my lack of cash to put on top of the money from the sale so I decided to build on what I had. On the plus side it allowed me to split the cost of everything I wanted/needed over a few months and I learnt a lot from stripping it and rebuilding it which kept me busy over the winter.
If it is still in good nick and could stay on the road sell the bike and buy a dedicated track bike, let someone else spend the money.
As you are based up in Scotland your club options are fairly limited I believe unless you are willing to do a lot of miles but as said above, it is a good class to start in but the competition is still high. I’m doing a couple of rounds with Thundersport this year in golden era supersport and Hottrax modern classics so been keeping an eye on the times and they look decent at the sharp end. ____________________ Thundersport Pre-National Sport 600 2014 #92

Disclaimer: I do not race, these are just my thoughts on the process. I am planning to start racing in 2014 so I just thought I'd share my thoughts, NOT EXPERIENCE.
Most classes, as a novice you're not likely to be very competitive for quite a while, however, it depends whether you're a novice with a lot of cash, or a novice with a budget.
I'd have loved to race my 2002 R6, however, I sold it, because of how expensive it was to run and maintain in road trim, never mind keeping it tip top for race usage.
I am personally going down the route of Thundersport 500, it's bikes that can be picked up for sub-£500 very restricted modifications so fairly level playing field and bugets aren't going to be destroyed by accidents.
Repair costs on bikes like the R6 can run to more than just replacing the whole bike in the Thundersport 500 class.
I know it's not for everybody, but racing is racing, and I'm on a budget so taking a cheap option into dipping my toes in. ____________________ covent.gardens: lihp is my most favourite member ever |

Ok guys thanks for the advise. The only reason I went for pre injected was due to the cost friendly attraction, suppose I may have been a little naive thinking the R6 could compete. Il take your advise and sell the R6 as its in good nick and buy a race bike.
thanks again guys. ____________________ https://www.youtube.com/user/ScottishTwisties |

Phil I definitely agree that the CB500 looks like a great class, massive field, low cost and very very close racing (seen them going into corners 4 wide). I would consider it when I get a bit older and either run out of money or break too many bones on the quicker bikes.
As for tyres, use either Metzeler racetecs or Pirelli Supercorsas, standard is K1 or SC1 front (soft) and K2 or SC2 rear (medium). There will be more and more supercorsa scrubs available shortly as it is now the control tyre for all the support classes in the BSB so you can get some deals. ____________________ Thundersport Pre-National Sport 600 2014 #92

Depends on how quick you are and if you can make use of the extra grip...
Good quality scrubs (10 lappers from bsb teams) are enough when you start. ____________________ Thundersport Pre-National Sport 600 2014 #92
