Someone tried to nick my bike.. Alarms?

So this morning I was woken up to my housemate asking if we had parked the bikes somewhere else overnight... Looked out the window and both mine and my housemates bikes had gone!!

Found my ZXR in an alleyway behind the house opposite where they had gone to town on the ignition barrel and smashed the steering lock mechanism off, then proceeded to try to hot wire it but luckily failing to do so!!

We didn't help avoid the situation by getting a tad complacent and not locking them up that afternoon, but they managed to take 2 bikes off the front garden, about 6ft from three of us sleeping, drag them across the road and break the steering locks without anyone noticing!!

My housemate wasn't so lucky and they managed to get away with his Huoniao HN125.

As for mine, I'm thinking of getting a cheap £20 motion alarms from ebay, just so if anyone does try to drag it off again it should hopefully sound and wake someone up/put them off.

Anyone fitted them/worth the money? It's not worth me getting anything more substantial as the bike's just not worth enough to warrant it.

Yeah, I have one on each of my bikes.

I would never depend on it alone for security but it's a bit of extra peace of mind, especially if I am leaving the bike somewhere other than at home and don't have my locks & chains available.

You can grab a cheap Cyclone V2 alarm. Loud. I've just fitted one on my bike after some arse tried stealing my bike

get a massive chain with a massive lock aswell.

loop it through the back wheel and over the back seat.
keep the chain loose so it makes as much noise as possible when moved.

I know people slate Oxford stuff but I've had a Screamer disc lock from day one, used every day and only needed new batteries once.
Still works perfectly, I squirt a bit of WD in the key hole now and again to keep things smooth.
Very sensitive, you only have to rip the velcro on your glove and it goes off!

I have the Almax series 3 lock, I just didn't lock it up that night

I have Datatool on the Firestorm. Its not all that loud though.

When the new bike arrives it comes complete with Yamaha imobiliser built in and for added protection I have already got the Cyclone V2 which I will rig up to the indicators. I have the instructions. Seems as simple as connecting the wires to the battery and placing the box and siren somewhere dry. You do get all the fittings should you wish to add the imobiliser and remote start but I wont be playing with that. Even get 2 key fobs already tuned into your box and clear instructions on setting the sensitivity.

I have a Hawk alarm with remote start/immobilisor i'm yet to fit, however when I do get round to it I'll be leaving the remote start an immobiliser off it as the bike already has HISS

Hopefully easy enough to fit

Another for the Cyclone V2.

There's only two wires you NEED to fit. The ones going to the battery terminals and that will power the motion sensitive alarm. I cut all the other immobiliser and remote start jazz because I don't trust some cheap electronics to affect any of that. It just sits as a separate circuit so can't affect my other electrics ... unless it shorts

I had a cyclone 2 fitted to my Hornet. It was easy enough to fit. The only concern with it is that it is incredibly easy (Especially on my bike) to just access the battery and cut the wire. I don't think it has a backup to this. So can be gotten around quite easy.

That Almax 3 chain you have, why not use that? You lazy, lucky numpty! Chances are the shitehawks will be back in the future better equipped for the bike, clunk click every trip.

Steering locks are broken with a good kick with heavy footwear, as they showed that one time in documentary about how easily it is done and why it so important to install a bike alarm along with a disc lock for added protection with a cover over the bike. Why? the more obstacles you put in front of a thief the more likely they will look else where for something more easy to steal, as they don't like to stay to long in the open.

I remember a cop saying that thieves love the bad weather the more worse the better it is because owners/neighbours will think it's just the weather making the alarms or something being blown about creating so much noise outside that night. They like to steal between 1am and 4am, as most people are fast asleep and with double glazed windows it has made it so much easier for prowlers to stalk the place. So, a motion detector outside light with a fake camera or not will further deter them thinking you are on candid camera!

Install a reasonably good bike alarm with a hot wiring sensor built into it in case they try to hot wire it to go. The smaller bikes are so much easier for them because the cop also stated that they usually work in teams of 4/5 (one extra being the driver or lookout) using two pieces of scaffolding pipe they each take a corner and lift it quickly on a wild night into the back of their van and if the bike is alarmed then they can quickly work on disabling because if someone looks outside they can only see parked vehicles with nobody around then ignore the alarm thinking it was just the weather causing it to go off instead rather than someone tampering with a vehicle.

1) alarm the bike and do install the light emitting diode that comes with it to show all others it is alarmed to deter them

2) disc lock to prevent walking the bike away even if the steering lock is broken by them by kicking it

3) a heavy chain with a drill proof, acid proof & freeze proof lock that cannot be broken that way to undo the chain, and if possible chain is of good quality and even better if the outer is of an metal covering rolls around it does help too to prevent sawing, but if they do have an industrial strength bolt cutter they will get through the chain or the bar on the lock you just have to make it as difficult as possible for them to make them walk away from it!

4) Data tag the parts of your bike will be of an even greater deterrent because they have to waste their time searching for them if the can, plus it makes it so much simpler for the Police to find the original owner of the stolen parts if recovered by them!
