Hey guys,

I'm gearing up to repaint the frame, fairings and tank on a Honda CB-1 that I'm working on rebuilding. Going to be using a compressor setup, but what paint should I use that won't cost an arm and a leg?

I have had a look at the specialist automotive paints but they seem a bit on the steep side. I have heard some good things about the smooth variety of Hammerite.

So assuming my prep work is good will I be able to get a good finish with their smooth paint? From my understanding their smooth paint is a finished product, i.e. it does not need primer or a top coat but would I get a better finish using their red oxide primer and a clear coat on top?

Thanks!

Obviously I have said something stupid... Please enlighten me! I'm guessing you do not approve of Hammerite much. Mr. Green

hi,
afaik hammerite isnt for use in gun, with compressor, but im sure you could thin it down & try. Thinking
but whats wrong with going to a car paints place & buying either 500ml or 750ml or even 1L tin of paint? (base coat)
shouldnt cost much more than hammerite & it will be much more suitable & give a smoother finish. unless you specifically want that "hammerite" look"?
or are you wanting an unusual colour or fancy glittery paint finish? or just avoiding the 2 pack method?
could still get a tin of 1k paint specifically for that job....
cheers,
GAZ

OK obviously not then!
Red oxide is not a good choice for a primer coat. Filler primer or normal metal primer is. As for the paint finish I usually use 3 coats of paint & 2 coats of lacquer. You need to have a decent compressor & a good gun, a dust free, dry environment & a top tip for you filter EVERYTHING before it gets put into the gun...Even the thinners. Always lightly rub down each coat before the next one & tack it afterwards or else you'll get a shit finish.
Happy spraying! Thumbs Up Very Happy

Thanks for the replies guys. Excuse my naivety, I haven't done a paint job before.

Is filler primer what I've seen called 2k primer? That's the stuff you sand down after spraying right and it has a hardener you mix in? What are the benefits and disadvantages of 2k over 1k? The setup I'll be using will have filters for everything in-line so that should help but by that do you mean I should also filter the paint and the thinner before loading it into the gun (and if so how)?

Gaz, I'm not going for a Hammerite look but a normal finish which is what I thought the 'smooth' variety would do (at least that's what I've read anyway). When you say car paints place, can I just stroll in there and take my pick? Do the brands not matter? I've not even seen a specialised auto paints store before. Confused

Cheers!

use a two pack available from your local paint specialist if you use a clear over base (lacquer over coloured matt paint) you will not need a primer filler unless you are painting over something realy rough. two pack will stick to anything and dries in a few hours,
wet flat with 400 wet and dry between coats, if the lacquer is a little dull wet flat with 1000 or 1200 wet and dry

if my bike is not on the post click on the link at the end of my post for my bike less than £80 spent on paint. a nice blue yam 2ma ???

My advice is go to a forum about painting vehicles. This thread already contains enough contradictory & incorrect information to guarantee you're going to fuck it up.

Except he fucked this part up about etch primer:

Quote:
For outer panels from bare metal I'll always use self etch primer. It's recommended for bare steel, aluminium or GRP, and it won't flake off like a filler primer can. It contains an acid which burrows it's way into whatever it's being sprayed onto. That's handy for bare metal with body filler, but it can burrow under and lift existing paint or sealant, so it's not so good for repairs.

The acid prevents filer from kicking off, so at some point down the road your lovingly applied filler is going to end up laying in the road next to your vehicle...

He doesn't even mention epoxy primer which is the absolute dogs bollocks of primers.

He also shows how he wet sands filler, so before the paint is even applied the metal base under the filler is already rusting...
Don't get painting advice from welders.. or welding advice from painters.. unless the person is a certified welder & painter (me ferinstance Wink )...

.. but I'm not going to tell people on here what to do, just what NOT to do. It just turns into a pissing contest because people who once sprayed a lawnmower with a rattle can know more than people who have sprayed cars & aircraft that have won awards for the paint.....

This is a far better forum:
