Check you've not got a dodgy earth first. That can give all sorts of weird symptoms.
Then check with a multimeter to see if your reg/rec is fried. ____________________ My Flickr |

Ok so I did some testing
Across battery, engine running, idle - 7.7V
Increasing the revs to around 4-5k brings the voltage to around 13.5V, anything higher and it begins to drop again.
Across terminals (no battery), engine running - 7.7V
Same performance as above.
Across battery alone (disconnected), 10.5V
Battery currently on Optimate 'recover' program, although the way things have been going today, I think I may have killed it.
Other testing
Stator wires all ~0.5R to each other (limit is 0.6) measured at the reg/rec connector, all wires open circuit (> 20GR) to ground.
Earth points checked - not too high resistance (still around 1R) but I cleaned them up anyway.
Reg/rec wiring connector at the stator was a bit corroded, cleaned the male and female contacts.
Checking the reg/rec itself I'm reading one diode forward biased between each stator wire and the +12V, and one diode reverse biased between each stator wire and ground. I have no idea if this is normal - it kind of makes sense.

OK another quick update.
With the battery disconnected and IGNITION OFF I'm reading open circuit between the terminals (> 20 GR)
With IGNITION ON I'm reading 90 R? That seems excessive! Could be internally shorted ignition switch, maybe? ____________________ ZX-6R G2

So I slept on it and did some more today. I put the battery from the ZX on the bike (with some custom jumper leads as the battery is too big to fit ) as the CBR's battery is fucked - Optimate couldn't save it.
Starter fuse only (no lights etc) at idle I'm getting ~14.4 volts across the battery. Drops a little with revs but not below 14.
With the other fuses in (lights on) I'm getting around 12.5 volts which again drops a bit with revs. That's not good.
I tested the voltage coming out of the stator, with the battery connected as lights off I'm getting around 11 VAC phase-to-phase, which drops to around 7 VAC with revs.
Also I noticed that charge current is around 1A to the battery at idle, less than half of that at revs. That doesn't sound right!
I can't think of a way to test the stator unloaded - the bike cuts out if you disconnect it.
What do you think, should I order a new stator (and battery )? ____________________ ZX-6R G2

Hi Clutchy, yeah I saw your thread Will check wiring to ignition...
JM I managed to test the stator unloaded. Bike cuts out because the pulse coil generator is in the same connector. Pulled those out and connected them on their own.
Output of stator around 18V at idle, all phases. Increases with revs to 40+ (stopped at that point).
Voltage at battery is around 12.4V with no stator connected.
These numbers don't really mean anything to me. ____________________ ZX-6R G2

Ah I didn't see that part. Bloody CBR125s. Other bikes I've played with have the stators and the reg/recs separate!
40VAC sounds healthy for around ~4-5k RPM. In which case I wouldn't suspect the stator to be the issue. The idle voltage seems low though. I'm not sure what to comment on those readings (hopefully someone else can) as the idle seems too low to me but at RPM it seems healthy. ____________________ 2004 R1 & 2018 XSR900 |

If all phases of the stator are equal then it's fine, try a replacement reg/rec, my daytona is running one from a ZX6R P7F (2007/8) which is a mosfet unit and never even gets warm |
