Questions regarding bike choke/not starting...

Hi guys,

To say first don't flame me as I really have no clue mechanically when it comes to bikes as I've only veen riding it a day, but what an eventful day it was to say the least.

Let me start off from the begining. I was going out to ride to my gf's house and I pushed the bike up my drive and tried turning it. Didn't start. I turned the choke up to middle. Started but didn't hold revs. Put the choke on max. Started and ran without holding accelerator for 2mins. Left it idling for 5 mins then set off (OFC forgetting to put the choke back down to minimal) ran fine, got to gfs stayed there for a couple hours, went to go and meet my friend started fine (still on max choke) and road around for a bit with it on.

Later that night I got to tesco. Me and my friend went in got some stuff, chilled for a bit outside eating etc then went to go home. I started it, runs first time...For about 30 seconds then idles to a hold and cuts out. I try restarting, no luck tried multiple times..No luck. I ended up wheeling it over to the garage about 100 yards away, put some more petrol in it, turned the choke to medium and let it sit for 20 mins.

After 20mins I then went to start it on medium choke, no luck (it made a noise with the exhaust bobbing but just wouldn't turn over. Me and my friend frantically trying to bump it for an hour to no luck (probably doing it wrong) so I then decide that I would need to wheel it home. 3 miles to home. Bare in mind I am 5 ft 5 and averagely built this was one hell of a task for me but I did it eventually after about an hour and a bit through hills and what not (at 1.00am in the morning, I felt quite vulnerable at this point. My friend couldn't do much cause he was driving a car so I told him to go home and ill walk it as it was late) so I was quite chuffed about that.

Anyway where i'm at now is i've got it home after sitting for an hour or so wheeling it back it still won't start with the same thing on medium choke. I heard the exhaust starting bobbing but won't tick over. I'm not sure if i've fudged it up and flooded the engine by leaving the choke on. If anyone can shed some light on what I could try if it doesn't start in the morning i'd appreciate it. It's a Honda XR 125

One thing to say i've gained a lot of experience for my first ever night riding the bike! no complaints from me. Soon as I get it running again will be straight back on it Thumbs Up

You wheelied you bike all the way home?

I am going to assume you pushed/wheeled it home Wink

Charge the battery up mate.
Running the bike on full choke will drain the battery, or atleast it did on my 125.

Stop forgetting to knock the choke off.

Sound like you flooded the engine by running with a very rich mixture, this can foul the spark plug which will stop it from sparking. Try taking the spark plug out and cleaning it. A light sanding will also help.

Make sure you don't over tighten the plug on reinstallation, put it in hand tight then tighten it no more than a quarter of a turn.

Once you get the bike started get it off choke as soon as you can (about 30 secs) and turn the choke fully off and set off. Give the throttle a few blips to keep the bike from stalling.

What mileage is your bike on? Your engine (CG pushrod engine) can be really hard to start from cold if the valve clearance hasn't been checked and adjusted.

Sounds like your bike is in dire need of the clearances being checked or similar.

Choke shouldn't affect the battery, it doesn't go anywhere near the electrical system. What it will probably do though is foul the shit out of the plug causing it to not want to fire.

Then the subsequent trying to start it whilst it is in this shape will cause flat battery.

My advice, don't use choke, it is warm enough now Laughing

Just give it a tickle on the throttle when you start it and ride it nice and steady for a mile or so.

My guess is because its cold enough for the choke, your already presumably weak battery is made worse by the cold weather which then causes your battery to die after using the starter.

Cant say I've ever had a problem riding with half choke on my cityfly anyway Thumbs Up

Might have been an issue on your CLR CaNsA, I forgot to turn mine of about 20 miles away and it just died at lights. Managed to start up straight away. No idea, might put additional stress on the bikes electrics trying to spark, but electrics are not my strong point Laughing

Buy a new spark plug for it, its probably due one anyway. Riding it with the choke on will foul the plug. It would be worthwhile changing the engine oil also. Just because its probably due to have that changed aswell.
