Firstly, done a quote before anyone hits me with the shereen mallet, they are stupidly cheap for me at £370 TPFT... which is 1/3 of my first choice, ZX9R. Laughing

Anyone owned one? Any obvious issues. Looking at 20-25k milers, not too chavved up and just generally clean.

Going to be used for fun at the weekends, maybe an od commuter when weather is decent and to go across Spain on.

i have one at the moment i have never yet experienced the 2 gear issue that has been cried about to death so i guess look out for that.

First thing if you get one is too check the connector block which goes into the reg rec which is under the tank and seat as mine had corrosion inside the spade connectors which led to it failing to charge the battery hence dead battery and damaged reg rec.
i found it better to hard wire each spade connector (there are 5, 3 white, 1 red, 1 black) directly to the reg rec and then fill the whole thing with electrical grease and then tape up with electrical tape.

The bike has great torque from 3k rpm and to the redline so watch out as its great and prone to wheelies if your hard on the accelerator!
so long as your above 3k rpm the bike will pull like a train in any gear, below 3k rpm the bike is dead lol

there is plenty of storage space under the seat so a chain and disc lock and gloves can fit in there but an almax chain wont as its too heavy and will break the plastic undertray

its easy to service spark plugs easy to get to which are under the air box.
air filter is easy to change too.
battery easy to change to as the newer models 2004+ require you to take the tank off just to get the battery out which is a pain in the arse.

the bike feels very light especially at the front end almost feels like a 600cc in size untill you twist the throttle.
steering damper is recommended however i dont have one and am fine without one

first gear does about 80mph at the red line and gets there in a blink of an eye

fitting crash bungs is annoying as you have to drill a hole in the right fairing so when you want to take the fairings off on the right side you have to take the engine bolt out then put back in but i think im just nit picking!

at 24k miles the valve clearances need doing so if you get one or get one thats near 24k miles or past that make sure you see a receipt for that work been done or budget for it which is anything from £350-£450 if you cant do it yourself.

petrol last 100miles before reserve doing town riding and around 150 miles before reserve on the motorway and at todays prices costs about £18 for 13litres

bike has a manual choke whereas the new models have automatic fast idle which is annoying as it does not need to idle that fast for so long but you wont have this gripe! again im nit picking!

fuse boxes and ecu are under the riders seat

parts are easily found cheap on ebay if you need anything

this R1 is the 5JJ model 00-01 whereas the older model is 4XV 98-99.
a lot of internal improvements were done to the 5JJ model but its been said that the 4XV is even more of beast than the 5JJ im still trying to get a ride on the 4XV model

price they are going for is around £2300 to £3000

best colour is blue lol!!!!!!!!!!

in all its a great bike with plenty of torque in the lower rev range and gets wilder in the higher rev range but you have to respect it otherwise it will catch you out and the rear of cars appear very quick!

insurance for me is £183 tpft with one theft claim aged 32yrs with a garage in london

i will be selling mine if the 03 R1 i bought does not sell this weekend as i will be jumping on the 5PW model R1 which is the first fuel injected R1 so mine will be up for sale for cheap probably about £2200 or £2000 as it will made cat D as some idiot reversed into it and knocked it over doing very very minor damage but repair quotes were for brand new items such as new tank, left fairings, new bar end, new rear seat fairing. the marks are so minor its a bloody joke but it ok with me im not bother about insurances cats.
bike has 14k miles and full service history

if i come to the bcf bbq ill let you test ride it

now for some R1 picture whoreage!!!

get one you will love it!!!

Check the big white 20 pin connector block under the left hand faux carbon panel behind the headlight, they can become furred up and cause all sorts of electrical nut aches! Mine would turn it's own headlights off at random, once at 85 on an unlit single carriageway, left a fucking great pinch mark after that one!

2nd can go on bikes that have been abused, if it has you'll probably wanna have a looksee at the headstock bearings, it would seem it's hamfisted wheelies that can do it in the worst.

They can burn a bit of oil, mine recently did 500ml in 1200 miles, including a trackday, the oil light is a level NOT pressure sensor so when that comes on you know you're cutting it fine!

Thanks for the advice, was going to check out the gearbox initially but definitely worth checking the valve clearances are done Thumbs Up

Found one, its over 180 miles away so that is getting looked at initially, looks tidy and comes with some carbon goodies and some nice little touches so see what happens with that Mr. Green

Had a go on this a couple of weeks ago; my friend's 2000 model R1 with race pipe, rearsets and undertray.

Great bike, really easy to go fast on. I can imagine quite easy to lose one's licence on though... Shifty

Also - doesn't feel like it's working below about 80mph. Too much for me really but fun for a weekend toy.

I can almost guarantee that you won't keep it longer than about 2 months. You say you don't particularly like your RR for the ease that it goes quickly, this will be worse.

Like I said, its for the odd times, some days I like to up the pace, but for the days I don't... I have another toy on the way Wink

Also, I don't really keep any bike longer than 2 months Laughing

As much as I love them, I really really do not think I could cope with one in Spain. They appear to be fairly thirsty and 100-110 miles to a tank seems common place. Laughing

paddy, seriously consider the '98 - '99 R1, owned one for a while and loved it, then tried the '02, it really didn't compare in the adrenalin stakes...a '98 will scare the shit out of you in a good way.

Problem is, all the ones I've seen are either dogs or high milers. Looks like the fixed a few bits for the 2000 model too... so ironed out some issues.

I'd rather it didn't make me stain my pants Laughing

Some great advice in this thread. I am also looking at adding an R1 to the fleet at some point this year and also want an early one.

What makes the 98-99 the beast that I hear about as that is the kind of age range I want.

Love my 5JJ R1

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My%20bikes/Picture110.jpg

As said, the valve clearances will need doing around the 24k interval but they are easy to do

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Workshop/2013-04-16173638_zps93a3b3dc.jpg

As mentioned,I had the problem with the reg/rect connector as well,so hard wired it and filled with electrical sealant

Short wheelbase, aggressive power curve, quite racy geometery all adds up to a bike that insists you spend most of your journey looking at the clouds.

I had a 2000 R1 for 3yrs loved it. My favorite bike so far. I would have another in a heartbeat.

Woo, I be interested in your R1. Looks don't bother me too much, as I love rebuilding them and I spent loads on my R1 before nicked. As soon as I get all 3 bikes working ill be selling them to buy a better bike!

In the time I owned my bike, only issue was a burnt out clutch due to low oil. and a issue where it would bog down when pulling away when I got it causing me to stall it a few times.

Do the regulator/alternator wires run anywhere specific? Current plan is to place a multimeter over the battery and check to ensure a healthy voltage is reaching the battery. If not, it would be good to check the reg/rec or alternator output to ensure whether it's bad wiring or a bad component.

R1 stu bikes yours for £2000 if you want once the insurance pay me out which will hopefully be in two weeks at the least pm me and ill give you more details

All my thanks goes to Fizzer Thou who helped me out with the connector block issue for the reg rec and sickpup for his tense advice

i have also added a metal plate as advised by Fizzer Thou behind the reg rec to help improve heat dissapation as these reg rec do heat up.
on the newer yamaha r1's 04+ the reg recs are practically inside the air box so have a constant stream of cold air flowing on them which vastly improves heat dissapation and helps with cooling it down.
on the 02-03 R1s the connector blocls to the reg rec has been replaced with much better connectors as thats the first thing i looked at on my 03 R1

as for what makes the 98-99 R1 a beast i stilll need to test ride one so i can feel the difference

thing with the regulator issue is its very weird.
i had an 00 R1 back in 2006 and had it for almost 2 yrs and did almost 10,000 miles on it and never had any problems.
i bought the current 00 R1 in october 2012 did 800 miles and then had this problem.
i guess its just a case of how well the connector blocks are protected from water.
i have gone over this R1 and filled all the connector blocks with electric grease to prevent any water/moisture getting in and causing any problems

i have done just over 5000 miles since the reg rec issue and my modification and have had no problems since.
Fizzer Thou has done over 15,000miles with the same mod and no issues since either

gonna wrap the 03 R1 in black and make it Lord of the rings again lol

So, get connector blocks, pack with anything that stops water and doesn't short stuff, cover it with tape/waterproof shit and hope for best?
