Hi guys just a a quick question before my mod 1 tomorrow. I've been riding a scooter since I turned 16 and have gotten into the habit of stopping right foot down. On a scooter this was fine, but on my bike it means using the rear brake to slow, and using the front to completely stop as my right foot is now on the floor.

Will I be penalised if I do this on my test tomorrow? If I will, what's the best way to solve this as it's almost automatically done?

Thanks

I do the same, but it's down to my left knee being FUBAR (kneecap got torn off, been dislocated twice... flippin' school sports!)

When I did my test my instructor told the examiner beforehand because I had to prove I could do a hill start using the front brake, but otherwise it was just a question of whether I was riding the bike safely.

So unless you get a real stickler for an examiner my guess would be that if you're coming to a stop in a smooth, controlled way then it's not going to be an issue.

Don't put your foot on the floor until after you've stopped - then you can use it for both jobs.

I always use right foot down when I stop, left foot just feels un-natural, I believe the reason they teach you this on the cbt is because of potentially getting your foot ran over by passing cars, but then that means they would have to be REALLY close.

I asked my instructor about this and he said it doesn't matter what foot you use, test man didn't bat an eyelid to it either.

I think the idea is to use the rear brake on hill starts and to have it covered when you pull off normally. Say you pull away from a junction turning left. Some numpty walks out into the road right in front of you. While muttering twat you can either grab the front brake while turning (uh oh) or stamp on the rear (no drama).

Yes you will be penalised.
When stopped, you should adopt the 'safety possition' as you ought to have been tought on CBT.

Hands on bars, bum on seat; left foot down, right foot covering, and if necessary to hold the bike against a gradient, operating the rear brake.

That is the approved possition whenever stopped. End of, no excuses. (on test)

Hendon-Shuffle or the Cardington-Clog Dance; is the approved method of changing gear at rest.

From Safety possition; right foot down; make gear change with left foot; Re-assume Safety possition.

Arriving at a junction, and waiting before pulling away then; you slow down to give way in second gear, de-clutching at last moment to stop.

Assume Safety-Poss. Effect Rear obs. Cardington-Clog for Neutral, reassuming Safety-Possition; make obs for pulling away from junction; Cardington-Clog, for first and back into safety possition; rear-obs, re-check sight lines to pull away, move off if safe to do so.... and the gap you had been hoping to jump into hasn't passed you by whilst you have been dancing for your supper Rolling Eyes

It can actually be done, and done with some measure of finesse, without impeding progress, if you have it drilled to reflex, but it is a bit clunky, and most will just go from 2nd after stop, straight to first and ride the clutch....

BUT on test, you NEED to assume Safety-Possition whenever stopped, MORE be SEEN to assume Safety, and do your rear obs AS you assume it. Make sure you let them see you move your head, and dont just duck and bob, make them clear precice movements that are distinctly a full rear observation, or a 3/4 blind spot check, and not a hammed up mirror check or sloppy life-saver.

When you do your obs on test, dont just glance into the space you think you should be looking at; LOOK into it, find something to focus on, pause long enough to say whatever it is you are looking at, I dont know "Red-Car" or "Green-Cone" or whatever it is. That way, a) you WILL have actuially done a propper observation, and seen something, b) you will have held the obs long enough for it to be noticed as such by examiner.

Put your left foot down, or don't. You need 4 minors in one category to fail.

I am assuming you are thinking of putting the right foot down after the high speed maneuvers? Because you won't be touching the front brake for any of the slow stuff!
I don't know if it would go against you but why would you want to do it? Finishing your braking with the front brake only will end you up in all sorts of trouble, get into the habit of keeping that rear brake on until you stop and get it in fast, not just for the tests but for the rest of your riding life Thumbs Up

I do the same, but it's down to my foot and ankle being crushed in an accident 15 years ago... luckily I passed my test years before the accident so it's never been an issue Thumbs Up

Left foot down, right covering rear brake is a better way to sit on the bike so just do it that way. Its more stable, no chance of accidentally poping the bike into gear. If you want to pass the test you want to do it well surely? Not just fake your way through?

My mate got 2 minors for not adopting the safety position (putting right foot down).

But its all about the situation your in I think. If there is a dip on the left of you then put your right foot down. Same if there is a drain or leaf or something.

But I would stop over thinking before your test. Your in a car park so just put your left foot down just in case.

If you have a bike with ABS it wont really matter if you take your right foot off the brake when you stop, but it isn't really a good habit to stop with only the front brake. If your front wheel isn't pointing straight, it may be embarrassing! Laughing

I do both. sometimes stop with right foot covering, sometimes put both feet down. Dirt I put both down just in case I lose my footing with left foot. MX boots have a flat sole pattern so it is easy to slip on stone.

The correct way I guess is left foot down and right on brake, so if you are learning may as well learn the right way.

After you have your licence no one will care. do what you like.

Just got back, stopped with both right and left and the examiner didn't say a thing. No minors, and he said that I drove fine, nothing to discuss at the end. Now on to mod 2 Laughing

left foot down also means if you slip or lose it somehow the bike falls towards the curb not the oncoming lane Thumbs Up

Seconded - slip it in to first, clutch in, right foot on rear brake until I'm pulling away.

I think it would be easier to do it Fred Flintstone style: both heels down to stop, when you pull away, run with both feet Mr. Green

FAO: I had 2 minors when passing my test and one of them was occasionally stopping with my right foot down. Hence; try not to do it.
