hello!

I passed my test before the 19th of January, and I am restricted to 33hp...

On Monday I am picking up my first big bike, a Hyosung GT650R (£250 to insure Smile and almost exactly the same as the Suzuki Sv650). It is having a 33hp restrictor kit fitted, but i heard something that a bike can't be restricted to under half its original power under the new laws...might this affect me having passed my test under the old rules?? Its all so confusing Confused

Cheers Very Happy

If you passed under the old rules then the new ones do not affect you. You're fine restricting to 33bhp for the 2 years.

Yup, you're fine, just be very clear on that because Plod / insurers might not know it.

Also, your license will upgrade to full A automatically 2 year after your test pass date, there's no need to do any more tests, fill anything in, or send your license away.

Urgh, I assume that's an "FI International" kit at £200+? Puke

That'll be for a little screw in your throttle body, perhaps shorting an ECU wire, and a piece of paper with no more legal weight than an "is 25kW honust" crayon scribble.

At least get them to show you exactly what's being done so that you can remove the restrictor once your 2 year period is up, of course, officers.

Yes, it is. You're fine to ride it at 25kW/33bhp, but under a strict reading of the new license, someone with a new A2 35kW license wouldn't be, because it makes more than 50kW as stock.

Utterly nonsensical, but rest assured that it doesn't effect you.

Its all becoming clear now Very Happy

as for the expensive restrictor kit, it is a carbed model...and I have been told it will be less than £150 Confused

So even tough I was 17 when I passed, I am still only restricted for two years?

Oh, fair enough. That's £47 for the washers and paper from eBay, and it shouldn't be more than an hour to fit them, so I'd still question where £150 is coming from.

Absolutely, 2 years to the day after you passed, you're automatically on full A and can lulz your heart out at those who missed the boat and are stuck doing "progressive" access. Thumbs UpWinkThumbs Up

Throttle open to about 5-6K, then dump the clutch, you'll be fine.

In all honesty, apart from the weight, which is an issue with manual handling you don't notice it at more than 0.000000001MPH. In fact my bike is much more stable than my CBF at all times.

Get used to the bike, it will tell you how you should ride it, then you can whip it and do what you want to! Is it a twin like the SV, if so very forgiving and an ideal first big bike.

Mine is a Parallel Twin 650 and it pulls in any gear pretty much (obviously with varying degrees of urgency), I rode an XJ6 which is an inline 4 for a day. Great bike, but wouldn't swap mine for it, it always needed to be revved and as a first ride after passing my test I struggled a little. I thought that was just inexperience, until I got the ER6. It's so easy.
