exhaust bandage/bake bean can and gum gum. Gum gum on its own would just shoot out of the hole again.

Its looks welded before, could weld again?

Really time for a new exhaust i'm afraid or a good 2nd one.

Ask wemoto if it will fit the 2003 model. Have a look at another 2004-2005 bike and see what the difference is

Find a local bloke who can weld it for you.

The rest of the area looks in decent enough condition, clean it up and get that bad boy welded up.

After about four years of patching up holes on my Magna's exhaust collector with putty with increasing frequency as the size of the holes grew each time the putty crumbled, i finally got them welded by a friend last month (so i had the invaluable benefit of "mate's rates" - given the amount of welding required, it probably would not have been economically viable to have had it done at a dealer).

I had a similar problem with sourcing replacements - spent ages looking on ebay for a replacement collector box, and the only ones available were located in the USA and would have costed over £100 once shipping was included, for a second hand item that you couldn't verify were going to be okay until you received it, so i decided to give up and go for the welding option.

If the amount of damage means that the pipe can be welded at reasonable cost, and you don't mind the appearance weld marks, it might at least last a bit longer than trying to mend them with putty.

Thats not a sodding great hole. Just a pin hole.
Gun gum liberally coated round the hole first then small piece of sheet metal bent round held in place with jubilee clip. Jobs a good un. ( Im not called bodger for nothing) Wink Itl hold ok for six months till you can source another exhaust.

Was warming my bike up this morning, it was behaving strangely (stalling when applying some throttle), then the engine note changed and I saw a big sodding hole had appeared in the exhaust.

I'm wondering is it worth repairing? I've been looking at the Holts gun gum thing from Halfords.

If not where's a good place to get a replacement? The exhausts I've seen all seem to be around £300 (new), except a 2003 exhaust on Wemoto which's £85, when a 2004 onwards exhaust is £275 Shocked There were some changes on post 2003 bikes so I dunno if it would be ok.

Thanks for any advice.

Oh dear... Rolling Eyes

Gun-Gum, Bean tin, Jubilee clip.

Spend any money saved (from having to buying a new exhaust) on beer. Do not, under any circumstance, put a wee bit away every week for a new system. Very Happy

I'd have to take it to a garage as I don't have any welding equipment & I'm a bit $hit at welding anyway Smile Any idea how much they might charge?

There's a used exhaust on eBay but it's an auction that ends in a week.

If you can't wait for the auction to end (and there's no bids yet) you could contact the seller and make him a reasonable offer to end the auction early? I'm not sure on the Ebay rules re this but I have had people ask me to do this in the past.

Gun Gum paste is actually shit these days and not worth the pennies while the tape version is better, except both of these is only a quick fix to get you home from a journey for a permanent fix to be done it.

As mentioned earlier get someone to weld a brace over it to seal it just as long it can pass an MOT with it because spending money on welder's time for doing the job will be expensive if his work will not pass nearing an MOT inspection time then having to source a replacement asap to use your bike on the road once again as normal. So make sure otherwise get a replacement used one in good condition or new instead?

chip away the some of bad weld from the area around the pipe, use some gun gum exhaust tape and finish off with a hose clamp to prevent the build of pressure within pipe forcing its way through the hole and I think that will be a far better long term solution until you can afford a permanent solution that would pass an MOT inspection or sourced a good used exhaust or new one instead.

I had an exhaust made from gun gum, didn't last long.

That exhaust looks half decent apart from the hole, if welded well I'd probably keep using it.

Either way, start soaking the studs in plus gas.

One I heard from a bike shop, and I've tried (anything for a quick bodge), rather than gun gum, try high temp instant gasket (and the bean can + jubilee clip)

Or HT gasket + exhaust bandage (making sure to secure the thick tinfoil stuff around until bandage cures).... should be a quick fix.

I should point out I've had the gasket on my exhaust for about 30-40 miles and up to 11k rpm and it still hasn't popped where as the gun gum would have been powder by now

Have you checked the battery voltage level just in case you've managed to flatten the battery trying to get it to run properly? Maybe giving it a good charge will help!

Check your spark! Take off the ht plug and hold the ht lead 5-10mm away from an earth point....head bolt or the such but use something insulated!!! If that gives a nice blue spark that can jump at least 8mm then try a new plug. These will start without having an exhaust fitted so loose seals won't stop it running. My first checks would be plug or ht cap failure. If the new spark plug dont fix it then put the bare ht lead straight to the plug with the plug cap removed. If that don't fix it possible ht coil or Cdi issues. If its pumping out white smoke it sounds like its getting fuel.
