Hi

I've a friend that has a 50 that they can ride on their car license as they passed prior 2001.

They can legally ride without L plates.

Could they ride abroad on a 50cc without doing a big bike test? I'm talking France / Spain.

Can't find the answer on the gov.

If you have a car licence prior to 2001, you can ride a 50cc without L plates, and also carry a passenger. After 2001, you need a CBT, must display L plates, and cannot carry a passenger, unless you do your A1 motorcycle licence which restricts you to a 125.
Also, no 50cc bike can go on a motorway, its far too dangerous.

No idea about other countries though, sorry!

Edit, read the question wrong, seems you already have the info about the UK, just clarifying it for you Laughing

I passed my test about a month after the new law came in so I had to do my CBT, I was told at the end of it that anything up to 50cc and I didn't have to display L plates... didn't say anything about pillion, but I still did anyway

It depends on the law in the specific country you are going to. UK law does not dictate what you can do in foreign lands (At least not since the empire fell Razz) They will need to find a tourist information place for the country(s) they are going to.

It would appear on a car license in France and Spain you can ride up to a 125.

Could be a winner. Catalunya here we come!

Yup, Abroad is a big place, it's entirely up to the local interpretation of the 3DLD. That "A1 bikes on a B license" is ace, isn't it? Wink

One thing to be aware of though is that if you have travel insurance then it may have a clause specifically excluding accidents while riding a motorcycle for which you don't have an appropriate UK license. I recall someone being stung on that a few years back, and it's not like insurers tend to change things to our benefit.

I know its not answering the OP's question but it may help clarify other answers. I copied this off the Gov website

"CBT if you have a car driving licence
If you passed your car driving test before 1 February 2001 you can ride a moped without completing compulsory basic training (CBT).

If you passed your car driving test on or after 1 February 2001, you must complete a CBT course to confirm your full moped licence. This means you won’t have to take CBT every 2 years to continue riding a moped.

If you already have a CBT certificate and then pass your car test, you can ride a moped without L plates without taking the full motorcycle test.

In this case the CBT certificate for riding mopeds will last for as long as your car licence."

So if you have a car licence, hang onto an old CBT cert and you can use it for the rest of your days...
