Giving up biking - worried about hearing loss

I just want to know what you guys think, i have been riding a 125 for about 2 years. Nice little bike not that fast but hehh it does the job.

a month a go i passed my bike test and got my self a 600cc bike. I am not complaining about the bike.

The thing that worries me is the hearing loss which i have been reading about plus i dont have lots of money to spend on expensive gear as well. I got a textile jacket, textile trousers and gloves and all that. That was all ok on a 125 cc, but on a 600cc i need to fork out more and more money for leathers and better helmet and ear protection.

I just cant afford fork out for expensive leather and helmet for 400 odd quid. After my last journey to Birmingham (240 miles round trip) and back my ears are slightly whining.

I am just thinking about my finance and hearing loss, I am planning to sell my bike and get a car. Since i have my licence already i can buy a bike later if really want to providing that finance in order.


Anyone else had this worry, i wasnt prepared for a bike bike financially i think. I am really worried about hearing loss as well

Earplugs are cheap, and surely coming off a 125 hurts just the same as on a bigger bike?

Hearing loss is preventable using 15p earplugs. Textiles don't give a shit what cc your bike is, I use textiles on a 600 every day.

Sounds like bullshit to me, I'm reckoning you don't like the scary 600 because it makes your arse pucker when you open the throttle . If that is the case, flog it and buy something you are comfortable with.

A bag of roll-up ear plugs from Halfrauds costs me £6 or so and last several months (a pair a week or so).

I can't actually ride any longer without earplugs. If I forget, I stall at the first set of lights or give-way line because I'm not used to hearing the engine loudly.

Ear plugs are ridiculously cheap.

I got my 2 piece AGV leathers from eBay for £20. Fantastic condition, fit me perfectly.

If you do a lot of motorway driving, get a massive screen, wind-blast a thing of the past.. I also find listening to music helps as the ear phones block the noise.

If you want to buy a car, buy a car, but please don't demean yourself by making such ridiculous excuses to justify your decision.

First, car insurance will cost you how much?

Silicone putty = £3.40 delivered on eBay, enough to make 2 pairs of custom earplugs.

Helmet skirts cost from £10 delivered and cut down on wind noise substantially.

While you're on there, you may notice plenty of used leathers for sale. Also try Gumtree, where you can pick up some genuine local bargains for less than a tank of fuel.

Rubber ear plugs. Used them for 3-4 years, hearing has never got worse. 1 pair lasts me at least 3 months (at which point I lose them, or they lose shape). I clean them every day, and they get a dettol bath each week (teeny splash of dettol + hot water). Not had an ear infection in that time either.
