a month a go i passed my bike test and got my self a 600cc bike. I am not complaining about the bike.
The thing that worries me is the hearing loss which i have been reading about plus i dont have lots of money to spend on expensive gear as well. I got a textile jacket, textile trousers and gloves and all that. That was all ok on a 125 cc, but on a 600cc i need to fork out more and more money for leathers and better helmet and ear protection.
I just cant afford fork out for expensive leather and helmet for 400 odd quid. After my last journey to Birmingham (240 miles round trip) and back my ears are slightly whining.
I am just thinking about my finance and hearing loss, I am planning to sell my bike and get a car. Since i have my licence already i can buy a bike later if really want to providing that finance in order.
Anyone else had this worry, i wasnt prepared for a bike bike financially i think. I am really worried about hearing loss as well |
Oh come on, who told you you HAVE to have leathers on a bigger bike?! I don't. Mr Yaigi doesn't and he's been riding for 10 years. Good quality textiles are fine, yes leathers are 'nice to have' and provide a bit more protection should you go sliding down the road but they're not an absolutely must have. Plus they're not waterproof.
As for hearing loss - also something Mr Yaigi is worried about, but in 10 years of riding he's found a decent set of earplugs and a scarf (of the circular variety, not one that will flow behind you and likely cause an accident!) has cut the wind noise down enough for him to not sustain any crazy amount of damage. Some ringing after long motorway journeys but nothing permanent. I've found my £150 helmet and a scarf do me fine, haven't even bothered with earplugs yet.
Anyway, will a car not cost you more in fuel, insurance and tax?! ____________________ What would you do in life, if you knew you could not fail?

I only managed 4 months after passing my test without going for earplugs.
How the fuck you've managed 2 years, I'll never know ____________________ 09' Versys 650 | 07' FJR1300A

Hearing loss is preventable using 15p earplugs. Textiles don't give a shit what cc your bike is, I use textiles on a 600 every day.
Sounds like bullshit to me, I'm reckoning you don't like the scary 600 because it makes your arse pucker when you open the throttle . If that is the case, flog it and buy something you are comfortable with. |

I quite like those. However being tight (and poor) I like my "disposable" earplugs to be washable for a few times to make them last longer. Those lose their "memory foaminess" when washed about twice making them impossible to fit .
The plain orange ones by 3M can be washed pretty much indefinitely .
EDIT: link

Actual "reusable" earplugs are the worst thing in the world. I bought 3 different styles, figured I choose the best and stick with them. All of them pressurised my cranium on insertion and sucked my brains out on removal, they act like a piston in your ear canal. Very unpleasant and not remedied by being slow or twisting them.

Enjoy the tinnitus too for the rest of your life.
I use 3m push-ins.
These are washable, re-usable and you don't have to roll them up with your fingers. £25 for a hundred which will last a very long time:

I can stick with my textiles thats not a problem, i belive that the jacket is a bit too big for me and at high speeds it flaps around a lots,
the reason i havent got ear plugs all this time is i was always doing short journeys on my ybr 125 and never really do like 60mph, maybe once in a while. So i felt that ive never needed them. I had to buy a new helmet, being an idiot i went and bought my self a frank thomas piece of rubbish tat. it was worse than my previous hjc helmet, which was bigger on my head but way quieter. This one lets is so much wind.
How do we use a Scarf to block the noise?
In terms buying a car, i am just thinking that it will be more convenient and more user friendly

So, to sum up:
Grow a pair. And buy earplugs. And go on eBay and get some secondhand leathers. ____________________ Triumph Daytona 675 track bike + girlfriend's Honda Hornet 600

If you have a snugly fitting scarf it will stop the wind noise coming up through the bottom of your helmet - much like the chin guards things many helmets have, only I've found a combo of both to be most effective.
Sell jacket, get better fitting one.
Buy earplugs.
If this is too much effort for you then your heart isn't in it.

Those oxford branded ones are the same product as these: 20 pairs for £2.70
They stand up to rinsing off and re-using pretty well, I tend to throw them away after a week or so though.
I either have them in every journey or I'll have my ear-bud headphones in for music which do the same job ____________________ Well, I've wrestled with reality for 35 years, Doctor, and I'm happy to state I finally won out over it. - Elwood P. Dowd |

If you want to buy a car, buy a car, but please don't demean yourself by making such ridiculous excuses to justify your decision.
First, car insurance will cost you how much?
Silicone putty = £3.40 delivered on eBay, enough to make 2 pairs of custom earplugs.
Helmet skirts cost from £10 delivered and cut down on wind noise substantially.
While you're on there, you may notice plenty of used leathers for sale. Also try Gumtree, where you can pick up some genuine local bargains for less than a tank of fuel. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
