A bit of heads up / is there anything I can do thread.

I recently took out a multi-bike policy through Swintons, I have three years NCD, 2 from the last insurer and one from the insurer before.

The reason that I did not use the first no claims when re-insuring 2 years ago was that the insurer would not accept NCD from when I was riding on a CBT.

After receiving a letter from Swintons asking for proof of no claims I emailed them two documents, both dated, one proof on 1 years no claims with my first insurer and one proof of 2 years with my second.

They have now said that they cannot accept NCB from two companies and charged me another £60 inc £25 admin fee for the privilege. Evil or Very Mad

Is this right that they can ignore that evidence of NCD in front of them ?

This is standard practice throughout the insurance industry and I wouldn't expect any company to do that.

You have one lot of two years no claims and one lot of one year; you don't have three year's no claims bonus I'm afraid.

Really? Shocked

I was always under the impression it was the number of years that you hadn't claimed on your insurance.

Yep and not at all the number of years you haven't claimed.

It is the tracable concurrent number of years on one stream of insurance.

You can have multiple streams and this is often useful - if you have two different vehicles insured with seperate no claims bonus it means that if you do have a claim, you still have some no claims you can 'use'. Say you have 5 years no claims on a CG and another 5 on a S1000RR and have an accident on the latter - the next year (presuming the insurer is ok with it as some don't like small cc no claims for a big bike) you can then use the CG no claims 'stream' for the sports bike and start afresh on the cheaper-to-insure CG.

Ok so that makes sense as to how you can end up with two streams however I did not I simply could not use the 1st year, thus I have still been ridding for 3 years without claim and still have 3 years No claims on one stream on insurance as up until now I have only ever insured one bike at a time ?

Doesn't matter... because you used an insurer that insisted you start again, you created a seperate stream.. they don't have to run concurrently.

You might be able to find an insurer that agrees that t combine them... but what is important is the number written on the proof of no claims I'd you want it to be accepted anywhere. If the biggest number you have is '2', that is what you have.

Sorry, I don't think that you're going to win this one.

No Claims is a scheme/scam that's entirely at the whim of individual insurers.

AFAIK there's no central records or universally agreed terms. It means exactly what your current insurer says that it means, and it's usually "we'll recognise exactly the number of years that your last policy said, and no more".

Since Whitehall has such a rager on for regulation I'm sure it will get formalised eventually, but at the moment it's down to the contract that you "agreed" with your current insurer.

wait till you get to having 15 yrs no claims and then suddenly it drops to 9...

simply because the insurers system only goes to 9

thankfully i was able to go back to my old insurer to get a statement proving 15 yrs... but now i have to be carefull

So if I change insurance companies every year, I'll only ever be able to have 1 year NCB?

I'm confused. Do I need to stay with the same insurer to rack up easily provable NCB?

no you can go to any insurer you want, the only restriction is if they will accept the proof of no claims from the previous insurer.

the ops problem was his insurer wouldnt accept no claims earned while on a cbt not a full licence

Nope each insurer adds to your NCB if you swop companies, you are entitled to a statement of your current NCB from the company you leave to prove it to the next one. Sometimes like ebike it's easy you just tick a box and they send your NCB entitlement letter no problem, others can drag their feet.
The OP had one year as a learner which the insurance wouldn't count on as a NCB year.

edit Too slow Embarassed got distracted as I was replying, wot Charlie says

My understanding is the discount stops at five years NCB, so any NCB greater than that is worthless.

They generally ask about losses, claims and convictions in the last 5 years, but maximum NCB/NCD[*] entirely depends on the insurer.

Which is why you can get nobbed over royally if you switch from one lot who will take your eleventy years then just say (truthfully) that you have "5+ years" to another lot who would have given you a larger discount on the full number of years.

Are you? Why?

The only way I'm aware of to compel a reply would be with a Subject Access Request, for which they can charge you £10.

I'm not generally pro-regulation, but since insurance is mandatory anyway, this is one area where it's well overdue.

[*] Is it a "Bonus" or a "Discount"? They can't even pick a uniform way of marketing it.
