Puleld up to the lights today, temp was at 82, gave a quick rev to an Audi R8 next to me, as you do..

Yeah, there was a cloud of steam/smoke that came up from the bottom left of the bike. Got home as just so happened to have my camera on me anyway, took this photo of the pipe between engine block and exhaust headers.

https://apple-twist.co.uk/r1pipe.JPG

Does that seem overly pressurised to anyone else...? Temp hasn't risen over about 90 since owning the bike, doesn't seem to be doing any harm, but with spain coming up, I don't particularly want stuff breaking on the journey... so looking for fixes if needed. Thumbs Up

When my gpz was run with frozen pipes one of them looked like that, turns out the head was warped so it must take a lot of pressure to do that to a pipe.... is your thermostat not opening or something?

That doesn't look good...as has been said there must have been some serious pressure to do that. Could just be a coolant system blockage though I suppose. Is your oil milky? If not then its probably not the head.

Edit: My friend has just said to check the rad gets warm. If not its the thermostat.

Not that I've had this issue but heard of it before, if gas is weeping passed the gasket it can pressurise the system create an air lock, and the rad would feel cold potentially even with the thermostat open.

You can get the sniffer kits to dip in the coolant, it'll tell you if there's exhaust gas in there so you can either rule it out or know the real cause........

I've just remembered....

When I left earlier, temp said 'Lo'

It stayed on 'Lo' for a while, I did wonder why it was on after a mile... It then went to 46 and stayed there for another mile or 2, I remember being overly concerned but obviously, my bad memory neglected to remind me until now...

If you have air in the system it can collect around the thermostat housing/CTS depending of location, giving you a false low reading while the rest of the system gets to silly temps.

Bleed the system properly, then make sure everything is getting hot that should.

Did you find where the leak was?

Leak was from the top of that pipe.. have bled part of it, massive rush of air, will do it properly when I can start the bike without being a nuisance.

Nope, no signs of head gasket failure yet.

Was going to take tank off, remove thermostat and test, empty the water system and refill and bleed as per le manual.

If the thermostat has failed you would still be reading high, unless you're extremely unlucky and got an airlock around the CTS and a broken thermostat at the same time.

Also I suppose it could be a failed CTS stopping your fan coming on.

CTS?

Temp is normal, not checked rad, fan does come on... or has been on before... I'll see if it comes on tomorrow from sitting there...

Sorry Coolant Temp Sensor.

Apparently specs should be:

0 °C (32 °F): 5.21 ~ 6.37 kΩ
80 °C (176 °F): 0.29 ~ 0.35 kΩ

Turns out the pipe just decided to fuck itself up, seems to be good once we replaced with part of the radiator hose from a Clio.

Have ordered the actual part so I can replace it properly, but wanted to make sure all was good before spending.

Photos and shit of taking apart and that...

Also... anyone know what discs these are?

And yes... I will clean it before I put it back together with the correct pipe Wink

I think the disks are jinchinjongwokayohiroshimas's TBF or some other ching chong ones.

ps. give the r1 a clean and make the down pipes shiney seen as it summer and they will stay that way for 6 months.

I had an er5 that the coolant pipe did that and spat coolent all over, i topped it up a little and did another 5k problem free miles.

All I can see on the edge of the disk is "aking" so they are either "braking" disks or some chonky special.

While everything is off, it wouldn't be a bad idea to fire it up and check to see if its blowing smoke or lots of pressure out of the breather pipe.

Also check the rad cap, worn out cap can add pressure to the cooling system. The rotor looks like a china made brand as they stated.

Those are Braking discs https://www.braking.com/products/view/23

I have them on most of my bikes and especially the KTM enduro.Far superior to the OEM discs and less grabby and more progressive than standard. When I need new discs on the R1 I may well buy them for that bike.

If only I was fast enough Confused
