I have had the original OEM chain and sprockets on the R6 for the past 26,000 miles.

Now when I am 'getting a bit of a move on' I find myself worrying about the consequences of the chain failing.
The chain has been lubed semi frequently .. and looks in good condition.
and i never gets mentioned in the MOT tests.

Should I:
1) Man up and just ride faster.
2) Buy new chain and sprockets.

I am unsure whether this is praise or insult.

It is a recognition of the fact you ride like a mad bat out of hell.

That's very good chain life.

Chains get longer with wear. They tend to need more frequent
adjustment when they are near end-of-life. If the chain:

Looks in good condition
Has no kinks (binding links)
Doesn't need frequent adjustment
The adjusters aren't near the end of their adjustment range
Runs smoothly on the sprockets
And both sprockets are in good condition

I would say you have nothing to worry about.

Maybe it's better to replace them now. Being a Gentleman of advancing years, memory loss could be an issue. It might be 50,000 miles before that memory pops to the forefront again Smile

I was going to say that 26,000 miles seemed great and £50 for that mileage made it seem like, if it's a maybe, just get it done. But had a quick look, and they seem to start at £150 Shocked

Do other parts of your bike speak to you or is it just the chain and sprockets? Question

To save you having to clean them I recommend replacing them.....something shiny and expensive. DID Gold.

To be honest...All sounds ok with your running gear. Treat it to a brushing with Parrafin and wipe n lube.

Yeah, as I said, the chain is fine.. no tight spots, doesnt pull off the back of the sprocket.. and sprocket teeth are fine.
I wash the chain 3 times a year and wipe down with acf50 ... then lube with a proper oil after warming the chain up.

BUT, its heading for 30,000 fairly fast ridden miles !
Its started to play on my mind. Neutral

I get yer.
I've not had to adjust the chain on the duc since I've had it.
Surely it would've stretched a little...maybe if I try 4th gear and see if that stretches it.

I run them till I have to start adjusting them frequently. That's the sign that they are on their way out.

Certainly no expert, but if it's starting to prey on you, could you be subconsciously noting small changes in the way the bike is working?

That's the way I would be thinking about it, particularly if the chain has been on the bike for so long.

I'd change them. Not a tough job and might have a good effect.

Miss Ed had an advisory at her last MoT about the chain and sprockets on her R6 recently. When we looked on Friday there was still some substantial life left in the final drive after 16,500 miles, but as the new stuff had been ordered then Miss Ed felt that it would be better to do the work replacing them anyway.

But the saga was made worse because once the gearbox sprocket cover was removed, the absence of the sprocket retaining nut became apparent Shocked
Luckily my local bike shop had the tab washer and retaining nut in stock so the work was successful.

If the OEM chain and sprockets have lasted 26,000 miles then I would replace now and have a good time riding the bike over the summer without that nagging thought that it might let you down somewhere in the middle of nowhere Confused

I'm still trying to understand how the chain on a 600cc sports bike can last 26k miles. Shocked Even if it was ridden conservatively how is that possible?! Even with a Scottoiler (which Silky's doesn't have anyway)?

The front sprocket and chain are still the originals on my R1 and the Renthal rear has been on there for 22k of the 24k now on the mileometer.

Just replaced mine after 10k, god knows how you're managing 26k!

I had tight spots and the worry of it snapping and taking my leg/engine casing/locking the wheel forced me to change it

26,000 is perfectly possible even ridden hard (but not if ridden like an idiot) and looked after.

I did just over 30,000 on my zr7 after fitting a new chain and sprockets including some caning around europe and nurburgring, I adjusted it twice in those 30,000, once was in the first week. still looked brand new when I sold it.

Now obviously the r6 is a faster machine but the zr7 weighs more and I was swapping between full and no luggage and pillion or not without doing any adjustments to suspension or chain.

TLDR: Man up and get on with it, keep an eye on it if your really bothered.

1) I was mistaken .. I have done almost 30,000 miles Shocked
2) I also believe that legendary (almost Casey Stoner levels) throttle control is a big factor in the longevity of bike components.. especially when ridden with gusto.
3) I DO have a scottoiler actually.... its still in the unopened box , in the garage, ... from when I bought it in 2006 Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Have you got a workshop manual? There may well be info in there about your chain such as measure x amount of links and if it's more than x then they need replacing.

If you are worried about it now, you will only worry more the longer you leave it. Order up a chain and sprox, replace the originals and enjoy the bike properly again Thumbs Up
