With the Savage's lack of a trip counter, my mind has turned yet again to building one from scratch (in b4 "just use a bicycle speedo). Since it means counting wheel revs, I'm going to have the speed available too, so it would be rude not to display that as well. And whilst I'm at it, the Savage doesn't have a rev counter either, so I might as well patch in to the coil and count those. Reading through Nowhere's Digital Dash thread again made me realise it's been a year since I last looked at making one for myself.

I'm not after a replacement to the main speedo, just a secondary reading on the bars so I can use a tankbag. I'm pretty sure I can get the input and processing stuff sorted, but I'm jumping around on the final display. Odometer's obviously going to be digital, but I'm leaning towards either a meter or just a row of LEDs for the tacho.

Anyhoo, whilst I'm musing my own preferences, what is your favourite layout?

I used to always be firmly against digital speedo and tacho. My only experience was a Citroen C4 and it just didn't seem right.

I rode a zx6 with digital speedo and tacho and couldn't stand the digital tacho, however I did quite like the speedo.

However the blade has digital speedo and analogue tacho and I am thoroughly converted.

Analogue/Analogue for me, especially in a car.

In a bike I could live with Digital speedo/Analogue tacho.. but again Analogue/Analogue would be my preference.

My preference is for a digital speedo and analogue tacho.

For extra kudos, make sure the tacho needle does the min-max full spin thing on start up.

What ever is on my current bike, and then when I haven't had the opposite for a while, I start longing for one of them. The cycle continues...

Analogue tachometer, digital speedo.

Happy with analogue for both though.

I do miss the sweep, the Fireblade just does a digi display spac out during start up. Sad

Analogue speedo, analogue tach! In low contrast situations, I can barely make out what speed I'm doing when approaching a camera! At least with an analogue clock, you can tell what speed you're doing from a glance based on the dial position. It's like with watches. Analogue over digital ANY day!

Digital is cool, but all it takes is a blown fuse for your cockpit to go dark! At least if you have your speedo drive being fed mechanically, your speedo will still read.

Until the drive strips a tooth, or the cable snaps. Nothing's infallible, and I've had more analogue units die on me than digital ones.

I find that with analogue, I'm not bothered that much by accuracy - it's "almost five past" or "nearly twenty to". With a digital watch I'm having an aneurysm if it doesn't hit zero on the seconds at the same time as the Greenwich time signal.

If I go digital, I'm wondering whether I'll have the same spaz out if my speed shows 68mph when a GPS shows 70 - it's like I expect analogue to be an estimate.

Analogue tacho, digital speedo for me.

As your speed becomes less legal an analogue speedo becomes less readable to me, particularly on bikes that can do 160+. Big digital numbers are easier to glance down at IMHO.

The only digital tacho that I've seen that I really like is the one on the latest ZX10R, thats pretty damn cool. Cool

This^

The tacho sweep is strangely satisfying, the Daytona insists on it, it won't turn over until the sweep is done Cool

My 1198 has digital both, with the tacho' being blocks building above the main dash. I never quite find the tacho' reading as easy to read as the analogue one on my ZZR. However, I prefer a digital speedo. The clock type one on the zzr seems very crowded with lots of numbers wedged on and tricky to read, especially at 'spirited' type speeds!

It's one of those pointless things that are inexplicably satisfying, like start buttons in cars (as used in an S2000, not the start/stop type of buttons used in modern shopping cars)

Digital all round for me, find its easier to see at a glance, particularly speed and in poor light conditions.

So you prefer this.. (MT-09)

To something like this.. (Street Triple)

I have never ridden a bike with a full digi dash but do want a demo on the MT-09... The last full digi-dash I used was a retrofit to my Vauxhall Nova GT/E...
Looked a bit like this but there was a fella back then doing coloured film kits to order to change the colours to whatever you wanted.

Digital dashes should have an option of the clicking noise when you're accelerating hard so you can feel like michael knight.

EDIT: man how lame is it that he says "super pursuit mode" every time before he presses the button. Laughing

I do like a white background with a black needle.

I reckon the dash on my 3rd gen VFR750 was damned near perfect (if it wasn't for the fact that the flexi-PCB wiring on the back of it is made of pure fail).

I did however recently fit a smiths chronometric to the enfield which is suitably quirky with zero at the top.
