not with booze though, they were on the way home from a two week trip around france on their goldwing. From what I've been told they were on a dual carriageway type road and ended up going down a 15 foot embankment, mumsie was thrown about 20 feet into a fence and dislocated her elbow, lacerations to one leg and knocked spark out. The old man managed to hang on and ended up with the bike on top of him, nose is not where it should be and face is a bit smashed up but all in all very lucky. He thought he'd killed her when he couldn't bring her round but she came to eventually then kept drifting in and out of conciousness.

They're both in a french hospital, awake and battered and bruised but well enough, she's had an operation to fix her elbow and been stitched up and is being kept in for a while.

I don't know any circumstances leading up to the crash but knowing him we can rule out dickish behaviour.

A bit gutting they're so far away really.

You can get to almost anywhere in France for pretty cheap nowadays, if they are going to be in for a while.

Sorry to hear about it, I always think that when a rider/partner comes off I wonder who will take care of them as it's normally rider and partner has to do everything for them.

Fuck the bike, they can get another one.

If they wanted to stay in France a bit longer , why didn't they pay for a hotel like everybody else Smile

bike is a complete write off, I think they'll be plane or training it home. Will be speaking to them later but I think she'll only be in there a few days. His lid was a caberg with the flip up face, so was hers. The day before they left she was telling me how tight her lid is and i said good, thats what you want when you crash....................whoops!

I'm having a guess that the front was up and something hit his face during the crash. Just a guess though Mr. Green

Can't personally see the point in sending lids off other than for purposes of blame, it's a risk with open face lids. Accidents happened, no-one's dead, that'll do.

Thumbs Up

Unless it was a Justissimo in jet helmet mode, they weren't open-face helmets, they were flip-up helmets. Two different things; the latter should not come undone in a crash, and should be as safe as full-face helmets.

The weakest spot in them from what I've heard is not them coming undone, but rather impacts to the side of the head (where the hinge is) not being adequately cushioned. There are similar criticisms of Shoei and Arai full-face lids (e.g. poor SHARP ratings for side impact), and IIRC the manufacturers' responses are that impacts on the side of the head are rare because the shoulder is in the way.

ok well i've spoken to them and something hit his face with the front of the lid up embedding his glasses in his nose.

Can't blame the lid for that, or any other brand of lid not being worn or owned by them.

SHARP would suggest that flip front helmets are not as safe as full face ones as the majority of lids on there don't stay closed for every impact.

Some like this Box helmet stayed fully locked in 36% of impacts.

https://sharp.direct.gov.uk/testsratings/box-sz1

Fuck that.

The Caberg suggests that you've got a 1 in 5 chance of getting your face mashed.

https://sharp.direct.gov.uk/testsratings/caberg-justissimo-gt

Flip fronts are not as safe as a full face because they are designed to open. This is an inherent weakness.

For anyone interested it was gravel on the road that took them out, right at the point on the road that le frenchy road workers decided didn't need a safety barrier Laughing and that's why they ended up slung down the embankment.

Insurance are sorting out the best way to get them home and the french docs want to transfer the old dear to an English hospital.

If I'd had an off and damaged my lid and the manufacturer wanted to cover the postage so they can use it to try and make future lids safer, why not?

I wouldn't touch a Box helmet regardless.

Other flip-fronts stay fully locked in 97% of tested impacts - and I'm guessing there are less than 100 impacts tested, especially since they don't have an unlimited supply of test helmets. I'd guess only a single impact caused the helmets to open.

https://sharp.direct.gov.uk/testsratings/caberg-konda

https://sharp.direct.gov.uk/testsratings/schuberth-c3

Those are the two flip-fronts I own. I used to own a Justissimo, crashed in it - into a bonnet, and then head first into the ground, lots of nice scratches across the visor - and no opening.

Everything else being equal, I agree; I also wouldn't wear a flip-front on the track, for example. But not all helmets are equal, and IMO flip-front vs full-face, for a quality flip-front, only has a small difference in safety. I believe there is more variance in helmet quality than the difference a flip-front makes.

For example, I'm particularly suspicious of helmets with tougher lining that can withstand Snell testing - the impacts they test with can mean the liner is hard enough to cause brain injury in lower-force impacts. The primary task of a helmet is to protect against the vertical component of the fall - the skull hitting flat ground from 2 meters up. I'd rather wear almost any flip-front than a US Snell-rated helmet.

And the failure still warrants finding out what went wrong with the helmet. The way you talk, you'd think only people with a death wish would wear a flip-front Smile

I find flip-fronts fit more snugly because of how the close in around your face - the aperture doesn't need to be big enough to fit your whole head. They are also quite short, front to back, for the same reason. My lips brush against the chin bar on my C3. If the OP's father had a full frontal impact, the shortness rather than the flip-frontness may have been the liability.

And I have little interest in switching to a full-face for either of the two main types of riding I do, city commuting on scooter and sporty sport-touring on VFR. The benefits of flip-front - biggest being zero hassle leaving helmet on at petrol stations, but also having an easier time at either end of a journey when faffing around with luggage, locks etc., just leave you lid on your head - far outweigh the minor differences in safety.

Thats a big if though, caberg don't want the lid and they don't need it if you ask me. Both lids performed well, old dears was shut and there's not a mark on her head or face, his facial injuries are from wearing it open.

Glad to hear they are okay.

Do you think this could have been avoided if they were riding a motorbike rather than a semi detached 3 bedroom property with lovely country views? Wink
