Picked this up today, £399 Buy It Now. 12 Months Mot, 10 Months Tax. Full Tank of fuel, Haynes manual and new set of brake pads. Funniest thing I've ridden, it's like a monkey bike with power. You can get it tipped right over round corners.
https://i1312.photobucket.com/albums/t525/wotsthestory/ba798f0f-e109-47ad-b396-44e96afd8bbe_zps9a0836bc.jpg~original
Took it straight to the garage and changed the oil which was filthy black, much quieter (and it was quiet before). Motad exhaust fitted and two good tyres. Plugs were in good order and fairly recent, from what I could tell.

Faults: Fork seals are leaking, think I might try and do that myself, got to learn sometime. If I can figure out how to support the front end. It has a little bit of what seems like clutch slip, initially when you set off, but roll off the throttle and it sort of clunks at the back then it's fine. Shaft drive problem? One of the reasons I changed the oil, just in case it was some in there causing a bit of slip. It was a free thing to do and needed doing anyway. Hangers on the right hand side were loose, really loose. All tight now. Front brake switch not working, I can sort that.

Not sure about the clutch/shaft problem diagnosis, but shafties usually have separate oil for the shaft drive that is often neglected. I'd change that if you're feeling mechanically sympathetic. I'm a big fan of these Honda V-Twins, they're extremely reliable and a doddle to work on. Smile

I'm not sure either. But I was going to change the oil in the shaft drive anyway. As I said, engine oil needed changing anyway. It feels a bit saggy, but knackered fork seals will do that I guess.

NTVs tend to be a bit bouncy and saggy at the best of times, don't expect to get it handling like a sports bike any time soon. However they are great workhorses. What's the mileage on your's?

Also, why did you buy it when you have the ER6?

ER6 is fine and staying, it's for a bit of car park Mod 1 practice for the Mrs and then something to play with when she does her DAS in the next couple of weeks. She's about to book it. I'll use it for commuting too, rather than the ER6. Quick enough for my commute.

It's done 75K over 20 years. Still got some life left in it I guess. Just found a folder full of service history and old MOT's.

75K isn't too high for one of these bikes. I dare say it'll do another 75 without too much trouble if you take care of it.

Just discovered that at some point in it's history, it had 4 spark plugs replaced, this was charged on the invoice. Laughing

You live and learn. Twin spark V-Twin, how odd (or it is to me). And 3 valves per cylinder right? I've got the Haynes manual out now, before I end up looking sillier.

There was another one up on ebay, but for 450 and older with more miles. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1990-HONDA-NTV600-K-BLUE-/141003118684 the one I bought looked a lot better.

To be fair, twin spark isn't that common, but Honda have been playing with three valve heads for yonks, Superdreams had them in 1978 and I don't think that was the first.

Seems like a lot of bike for the money, looks to be a good one Thumbs Up

As mentioned the shaft should have separate oil to the engine (recall helping my dad change his on his old Kwak GT 750), wouldn't mind picking up a 400 version for the old fella actually Thinking

No, you want a Bros 650 with an Africa Twin motor bolted in. Wink These have steel frames, the Bros has ally and chain rather than shaft drive.

Have a look at the Hawk GT Forum (https://hawkgtforum.com/) for ridiculous Hawk/Bros porn.

Not taking away from the NTV's bullet proof mile munching ability. But the Bros is definitely more suited to the track.

Ordered all the bits for a full front end rebuild, head bearings kit (tapered), wheel bearings, and fork oil and seals. For the princely sum of £42. Bargain. Thought as it was all coming off, make sure it won't need any of it again, at least not for a while anyway.

Other than that, not really going to do anything with it. Desperately need to find a R/H panel as there are electrics there and it's totally missing.

I will check the clutch cable and adjust, just in case, then perhaps further investigation later. It only really does it when setting off.

Could be a keeper.

got one of these on my drive Cool

the whole 'pulling away ' thing - normal. every one of the people I spoke to about these says theirs does it Thumbs Up

right hand panel - rocking horse shit. just sold a damaged one on ebay for £27 Shocked

there is a good owners forum with a wealth of information - https://www.ntvhonda.proboards.com/

if you need any spares, give me a shout, I have boxes full that you can have for cheap as chips Thumbs Up

take care of the rear shock - replacements are bloody expensive. the newer NTV ones have remote preload adjustment and are a direct fit. Deauville ones however, are not..........

enjoy! I loved mine - it has now done 89K and is still going strong Cool

Spent ages looking for the preload (in fact the shock itself), then when I was checking the left hand panel, bam there it was right in front of me. That remote adjuster is pretty cool.

UPDATE:
Replaced leaking fork seal and replaced fork oil in both. I couldn't get the bolt off the non-leaking one, so I thought I'd leave that until it goes or something else happens.
Was going to replace the front pads as I'd been supplied with some new HH pads, but tried briefly to get the pad pin out and couldn't. Will give it a proper go this weekend, lots of plusgas should do it.

Went on the night ride and it was faultless, front end was no longer sloppy, not nearly so much diving. Now done about 400 miles since I bought it. It seems to be getting sweeter by the day, it was definitely a bit bunged up. Fresh oil and a few tankfuls of fuel and it is somewhat more sprightly. Clutch isn't slipping quite so much, if it doesn't get any worse for a while, it's no issue at all.

I've got some new Iridium spark plugs, which I think are the equivalent to those fitted, if they are is it ok to fit them? Otherwise I'll have to buy a full set of regular spark plugs.
