You're reading that right.

Fully comp policy, garaged, no voluntary excess, no NCB, listing Datatag and an Almax Series 3 and Squire padlock = £222 lowest quote from Hastings Direct via thebikerinsurer.

Exactly the same details with the Almax removed and no physical security listed = £156. From Hastings Direct.

Jesus.

Nah thats not true - someones employed specifically to calculate these figures. He has very chubby fingers and uses the professional method of whacking the keyboard at random intervals to generate quotes Thinking

Its insurance logic.

You have that security because you think it will be stolen, therefore it is a higher risk Confused

Kind of like taking STD tests categorises you as a person who takes sexual risks, therefore has higher premiums.

Fewer people have had bikes stolen without security than those with security, so having security is a higher risk.

Statistics really do have a mind of their own.

I'm now contemplating them refusing to pay out because I deviously locked it up even though I said I wouldn't... Very Happy

Better you leave it on the road with the keys in the ignition and a sign to alert possible takers Thinking

I hear they throw in free legal cover under those conditions Whistle

It all started when people started getting into the habit of chaining their bikes to bags of money and gold, thieves would go to steal the money and end up taking the bike as well.

There is of course an increasingly popular method to deter the shorter would-be thief

Modification! Must be a big market for slightly-stolen alarms? Eh?

Yeah, cos going off my experience with bike alarms they just go off for no fucking reason and the most random times - for example, if iits sat perfectly safe in a garage and the alarm goes off just as some thieves are walking past. Just to let them know theres a bike in there!

Mine was no more expensive parked in the street with no security, than it was if I said locked garage. I didn't understand it either.

It may make sense - big lock and chain and you're more likely to have enough confidence to leave it in that dodgy area of town. Without it you spend a bit of extra time finding that safe spot with lots of people and CCTV around.

Declaring any form of lock is like giving your insurer a get out of jail free card.
I don't declare any security whatsoever, it gives them no wriggle room in the event of a theft and it makes no difference to my premium - I've not seen it become cheaper though!

Makes good sense if you ask me, I would have thought more people have some form of security than don't so they've found a way of making extra cash from the majority rather than the minority.
