Just upgraded my front sprocket from a 15 tooth to a 17 tooth. Just wanted to know if I need to run the thing in? If so I'd guess I just have to be a bit more gentle with my gear changes for a couple hundred mile. Ta.

Nope. If it's fitted correctly then just crack on.

And if it's not fitted correctly, you'll know within the first ten minutes.

The only thing we would suggest is giving it a good seeing to and then checking that the nut is still properly tight afterwards.

Just done a couple miles and I'm quite happy. It basically feels like my gears have shifted (1st feels like 2nd, 2nd like 3rd). Where I used to change to 5th at 60mph I'm now changing at 65mph. I have lost a bit of low end power but if I get in the habit of changing down more often it should be fine.

Conzar: I'll have you know I have a whole 9.5bhp! Rolling Eyes

That's cos you've changed the final ratio.

More teeth on the front - higher top speed, less acceleration.

Yeah I was expecting that lol.
Only problem now is the beast needs more power to back up the new gear ratio. I'm changing into 5th and its just going flat. I'll see how things go but might try a 16 tooth one soon.

Walloper: this is probably gonna sound stupid but what are power bands? I'd presumed they were just certain area of the revs which you get the most power ie 2 strokes being the top couple thousand Confused

at least with the taller gearing you can make use of that tail wind or down hill speed advantage!

If you're on a 125 4stroke then there is absolutely no point in attempting to trade acceleration for top speed.

A 125 simple doesn't have enough guts to push you terribly fast, at least a 4 stroke, I've no experience of a two stroker.

I'd recommend you just use the standard sprocket, it's already the right size to reach the top speed of that bike.

dublinclontarf: I went for a bigger sprocket because my route to work is 10 mile of dual carriage way, which meant I had to pin the poor thing to keep with traffic. This wouldn't be a problem but on my beautifully crafted Chinese machine flat out for this long results in oil coming out my air box (egr valves are a great idea Neutral ). So I'm not aiming for more top end, just trying to be kind to my little engine and take some of the strain off it.

thats because you went +2 you only need to go +1 on the front and -1 on the back.

In case anyone cared, I've just purchased a 16tooth sprocket. I'll let you know how it goes when it arrives.
