So I'm working on my van to swap the engine out. Haynes says to remove the manifold bolts and engine mounts....

Er can I really trust them........?!

So long as they are supporting the weight...

Stack your wheels up under the chassis rails as well if you are scared....but as long as they are positioned correctly, (as in the weight is going straight through them and they're not on the piss) making good contact with the lift point and the ground is level and solid then I wouldn't worry.

Can you not put concrete blocks under the wheels instead/as well?

When I had to work under my van, I used to stack two concrete blocks on top of one another, then one, then a house brick and use that as a ramp to drive it up onto them. Chock the wheels and Bob's your uncle.

Same effect could be achieved using a jack.

Make sure you lower the van on the jack slightly so the axle stands are wedged in. You'll be fine...just keep a bottle of water and a good book handy in case it falls and you're trapped for a few days.

You gotta die one day somehow....

I've been under a people carrier for about an hour that was held up with a tyre jack, and that was mucking about around the engine area.

At least I had the good sense to move my legs away from the tyre area first though

Thanks for the helpful tips and sad jokes. Having to have the van so high up off the ground as the engine is being removed from the bottom just makes me feel all rather erm, claustrophobic!

Currently the front is about half a metre off the ground. ....!

Dig a pit in the garden, park van over the top. That way, you wont have to jack it up and should the engine fall out, it wont break on whatever it hits.

Obviously stick a thick steel sheet under the axle stands to stop them sinking in the ground.

Then push van back the way it came and find a crane to lift the engine out of the hole.

This is probably a shit load more work than you have planned for, but i suppose it would work!

Good luck getting it sorted. Love how all the posts involve you dying a long and drawn out death.

Aye... Rolling Eyes

The issue now is not whether the axle stands can support the load but rather is the supported load stable?

I would belt and braces the project. The First Rule of Mechanics: If it can happen it will happen. Shocked

Get some solid shit under the hoowur as secondary defence.
It won't take much of a shove in the wrong direction to topple the fecker.

Thanks for all the help, got under there in the end and got the manifold off and gear linkages.

Propped the side of the van with wheels as a safety back up just in case.

Apparently the van isn't high enough to drop the engine yet! Sigh.......!

Once the engine's out the car doesn't weight much! Just don't let the engine fall on you, then you've got a problem

You have the same fear as me.

Even changing the oil, i'll have a trolley jack an axle stand and more often then not the wheel under the disk.

I had a series 2a Landrover fall off a jack while I was under it. Luckily I had the wheel under the hub so I lived but I was trapped, bruised and had broken ribs.
Belt and braces.

I've always thought that would be a particularly unpleasant way to die Neutral Slowly suffocating most likely.

I generally like to make sure if I'm working under the car that my missus isn't out of the house and knows I'm doing it so if it happened she might at least notice I've been a suspiciously long time out there Laughing

She was in the house and came out and found me trapped. I had a rear wheel off (no idea why, it was a long time ago) but I put it under the hub in case it slipped. I was only stuck for a short time and she relocated the jack and got it back up.
However if you ever get trapped for any time by the limbs do not let anyone other than parameds get you out. there can be a buildup of toxins due to lack of circulation and these rush around your body once circulation is returned and can kill.
Crush syndrome

The same thing that kills folk rescued after hours of suspension in a harness (if unconscious) the muscle tone is lost so the muscles suffer the same ischemia.
