I went into the local Harley dealer today to try on the classic style (Brando) leather jacket. They want £450 for one. On the label: Made in China.

If somebody had told me it was made of plastic imitation leather I'd not have doubted it. If the one I got recently from Amazon scored a one on the scale of 1~10, the Harley one scored a three. Cheap nasty skanky SHITE! Which would be ok if they were charging £75 for it. But £450?! Da Fuk?! Shocked Laughing

The belt-loops on it, bar-tacked like something out of Primark. I do not exagerate. My mind was blown!

And this is Harley, who are all about reputation and quality? As I said to the bird (wow, she was hot!), "I'm glad they're not making the bikes in the same place".

You know the difference between old-skool heavy hide and this modern thin pebble-coated shite. Harley are making their jackets from the latter and destroying their rep for what, a few quid on the tiny number of mugs who would pay that much money for shite?

I'm baffled. Somebody at Harley HQ seriously needs to be sacked. And if it's the top guys doing it Harley Corp deserves to die.

I definitely won't be buying my Harley brand new anymore either. Was seriously contemplating it but not now I know their ethos.

Are you sure the bikes aren't made in the same factory these days? Riding that leather jacket sounds safer than the Iron 808 (or something) I test rode.

Why not just go to an event where they have numerous stalls, ok you may have to wait a bit to get the jacket but from my experience of going to the local one some of the unbranded gear is extremely good quality.

You might get lady luck shine on you for once.

Sometimes I think the name has been little more than a branding exercise in the last decade or so. More concerned with finding new products to stamp a logo on than ensure decent quality control on what might be called core goods.

I think you need to cut down on those substances Hetzer ol' buddy! Harley have NEVER been about quality. Image yes, 'heritage' yes, but quality? Never.

I loved my Buell but the build quality was like a 1990s Chevrolet.

Are you talking bikes or clobber? I've handled a few vintage Harley jackets and they were fecking sublime quality.

Were they the ones made by Belstaff?

The 'brand' Harley Davidson isn't about quality is what I was getting at anyway. Apparently Harley (and Apple) are marketing men's dreams because people will actually have the logo tattooed on their body. Sad I know, but true.

I have no idea. There were racks of 2nd-hand ones at an un-official dealers in Japan, stuff from the 50's and 60's onwards and they were the absolute bollocks. If they'd had anything in my size I'd have bought it, even though they were stupid money (£500 to £1500+).

The one I saw today, I'd not own and wear it if it was offered to me for free. No BS. You know how quality leather needs to be properly broken in? Then wears like a fine wine and shit? The shit I saw today couldn't be broken in anymore than you'd break in a plastic mac. And wear? It would never wear, it would just fall apart.

I bought a genuine schott perfecto jacket a couple of years ago, down from £250 to a not tooo bad £150, thought it would still be the "original" brando jacket - they're now cheap shitty thin leather, designed purely for fashion.

I was looking at those. Sometimes you can see the quality of the leather in a pic from the way it folds. Looked like shite.

Last time I went into a Harley shop I lol'd at the jackets. They had a normal leather jacket, for say £300, and then directly next to it, the same jacket in 'pre-worn, distressed look' for a hundred quid more!

Sad wankers the lot of 'em.

I always want to kick out a sidestand of one of the bikes out front on a summers day* and watch them all fall like Dominos.

* I did encounter a new breed of Harley Rider a while ago. The Hazy Day rider. Won't ride in hot sunshine because it will fade the paint...

Wanker.

Some years ago I was in Aviemore (don't ask) when the HOG rally thingum was on - Blunder In The Glens. Or summat like that.

Many of the bikes were being taken out of the backs of vans. Coudn't risk riding up the A9 on the precious things, I suppose...

*My very first post and already I'm putting down other folks' taste in bikes. Could this set a precedent...?

They are a shame to be called bikers.
I was at Avimore at the 'Thunder yer jiz into Glen' meet.

I find it easier to pass trucks and those other 'Clowns of the Road' caravaners than it was to pass those fat bastirts on there cement mixer combinations. That wheesh of the tassles tussling in the gentle breeze off the screen is scary too.

And.... Why do they need to keep jabbin' the throttle on those feckin' things when rolling to a stop or when cruising for a big enough parking space? Can they not set an idle speed?
