 |
|
So, after my accident payout I've just gone and bought myself a CBF 125 (couldn't find a decent vara ) and swapped my insurance policy onto it.
I currently have my old bike which was written off as a Cat B sitting in my back garden looking sorry for itself, but it's now uninsured.
Do I need to inform the DVLA? ____________________ Current: '99 Fazer 600 | '99 Range Rover P38 4.6 HSE

My understanding of Cat B is that it cannot be put back onto the road. Certain parts (which I can't name as I've never seen a definitive list) can be taken off though and resold/reused. Your insurance company should have sorted that out and also taken the bike as they would effectively have owned it at that time (i.e. paid you for it).
If you managed to buy it back from them then you shouldn't have been allowed to do this as the insurance company should have scrapped it. If the insurance company left the bike with you then they shouldn't as you'll have a job getting it scrapped without the paperwork.
The DVLA should have a record of it being scrapped. If they haven't then the owner would be liable. So that'd be you as the insurance company would have cocked up by not informing the DVLA.
That said it's not unknown for a CAT B write off to be sold again as a road going vehicle
I'd cover your arse and dig out any letter your insurance company sent you notifying you of it being scrapped and/or cat b. Copy this and send to DVLA with a covering letter. Make sure you get a proof of posting.*
* Now wait for the posts with the alternative view that you should have as little correspondence with the DVLA as possible as they take this as an opportunity to as you for money anyhow.
Best of luck ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

Glad this question was raised, as I was unsure.
I've just agreed to buy back my Cat B Hornet 2 days ago (8 months old, 6000 miles for £104). Soon to be stripping for parts. ____________________ CBF125 > Hornet 600 (x2) > CBR600F -- slowly getting better

IMO and as I understand it if you strip the bike, that'd be including the engine, then take frame to one of these ATF centres with the V5 it'll be scrapped for you for free. The parts you are free to reuse/resell as required.
This meets the Cat B requirement as the vehicle (i.e. the frame) will not be on the road again*
* unless the VIN is subject to some dodgy dealings so I wouldn't rule it out completely. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

Just been doing a lot of research on this out of interest and it would seem that it's completely legal to put a Cat A or B bike back on the road provided it is road worthy and has MOT, Tax and Insurance. When applying for the V5 of one of these bikes, every account I've found has been of a DVLA inspector coming round, checking all the numbers match up and that the bike isn't dangerous, then the V5 coming through the post a couple of weeks later.
I've never been asked whether my bike has been registered as a write off when getting insurance quotes...so if they'll give you a quote and let you buy insurance then no problem! ____________________ Riding: BMW R1150RT `02 bought mildly crashed
Fixing: Also the BMW as I get less broken bits

Don't know about 'coming round' more like taking to a VOSA centre.
As in the Vehicle Identity Check (VIC). Which you have to pay money for, £41, but the cost/sale value of getting a roadworthy bike generally will outweigh this.
You can check if there's a VIC marker on a vehicle online or via 'phoning VOSA (tel: 0300 123 9000 apparently). Info from here.
However, might be easier to transport to VOSA for check/test as in order to ride there it has to be roadworthy with valid MOT (if MOT needed, not really a problem there) with valid insurance for the rider (possible mega hassles getting that if written-off shouldn't be on road marker by insurance company database in place). However, it doesn't have to be taxed to get to and from a VIC test. ____________________ ...and the whirlwind is in the thorn trees, it's hard for thee to kick against the pricks...

Nopeee nope and nope.
Get bike > buy tax if it needs it > buy mot if it needs it > call insurance "ring ring" "herro" "insure dis, its a cat b" "ok sir all done" ride away.
im buying a cat b already spoke to dvla and insurance theres no issues at all riding, taxing or insuring.
if you bin it you get scrap value back not the cost of new. ____________________ GOOD GAME BODYGUARD: https://i.imgur.com/8WePGgf.jpg

I promise I don't enjoy reading arguments on here!
So as far as the law is concerned I can sell the bike to the bloke and that's that? I said he can have it for a decent price because he came and picked it up when I crashed it for nothing 'cept a pint
It doesn't need to be SORN even though it has no insurance? ____________________ Current: '99 Fazer 600 | '99 Range Rover P38 4.6 HSE
