I really wouldnt aim too much to 'increase your speed' as such, speed will come with riding practice naturally, if you aim purely for increasing the speed you're likely to miss something or take attention off something else and come a cropper
As a rule of thumb i'd say never expect to run onto a roundabout - always be expecting to slow and stop, if it remains clear at each progressive stage of approach, still continue reducing speed but when almost entering roundabout make a last second left and right evaluation of the 2 nearest a-joining roads before running-on in case somethings shot out unexpectedly.
Again - speed is entirely dependant on roundabout size and road quality so can't really say in my opinion.
Also being fast in corners doesn't nescessarily mean you will come out of them equally as fast if speed was to be a goal - often slowing and positioning well into a corner will allow a much more fluent acceleration out of it and onwards.

Quick enough to be able to stop in the distance seen to be clear.
I'll get my slippers.

At a speed that allows me enough time to *react to.... whatever. Condition of road surface...view of the other approach roads..that kind of thing.
Size of roundabout has a bearing on speed.
In short.
You're recently licenced.... No need to rush.
*May included coming to a stop. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

The answer is "if you have to ask, then slower" .
Without specifying a precise roundabout, the question is irrelevant.
Some roundabouts you can go straight on at 190mph because you can straight line them, others you'll need to slow to 20mph to stay on the bike.
It's worth having a look at some 'advanced riding' stuff, which goes in to how to read the road ahead and set a safe speed. |

Why do you need to shave that extra ½ second off of your trip? Do you need to catch your girlfriend being DP'd by your best mate and the postman?

I'd suggest that if you want to make roundabouts quicker, you need to learn at what point you need to make the final decision to stop, either because there is traffic you have to give way to or because you can't see if there is.
That will involve becoming familiar with how your bike behaves under braking at different speeds and on different surfaces. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

I'd say as well the last thing you want to be doing on many roundabouts themselves is increasing speed really, especially if theyre raised or centrally blocked the last thing you want is to be coming around for the 3rd exit at speed with a car you couldnt see the far side of the roundabout coming out of the opposite exit to the one you joined from, recipe for a bump As rogerborg said - 2 seconds shaved off a journey, really not worth the risks involved
A corner yes, over time and experience you may find ways to go faster and steadier, but a corner doesn't have multiple parallel corners with other things cornering and attempting to get off a side road via you're corner which is the essence of a roundabout. Recipe for disaster at speed really. |

Roundabouts are the top locations for trucks to dump diesel. Worth bearing this in mind |

I did not really put that question right.
I am a new rider but I am also safe and cautious I have my name down for BikeSafe and will be doing a ERS when I get back from my holiday.
I practise when out riding on being smooth not fast however for some reason though when a safe opportunity arises I feel myself wanting to take a bend like Valentino Rossi
I never do and feel maybe I am being to careful, but reading your replies I am riding at what feels safe with my experience and will stay that way.
I am the same with filtering I feel at times my mentality is I am still driving a car when I am waiting in traffic and other bikes speed past me between it.
I now look up the line of cars and make a decision whether to filter or not If I stay put and a bike passes me I feel like I am being to careful again and push myself to do it. but now I am gonna stick with my gut instinct and so be it. After all its still early days for me |
