Would anyone happen to have a link to an on-line manual for a GPZ500?

Cheers

What do you want to know? My manual covers the Gpz and ER5. I could scan in pages if you're looking for some thing specific?

Let me know Smile

Unfortunately I need to know everything 'cause the thing's just not starting at all - there's a little bit of power going through the engine, as the lights / indicators, etc. work, but it won't start, not even a peep. It also won't even go into second gear. So I reckon we've got to go through quite a lot of trouble-shooting things to figure out what's wrong with it. ;?

If it's been stood for a while make sure you charge the battery (An optimate is your new best friend). Otherwise try and jump it from another car battery or starter pack. This is from recent experience of a bike not starting and fixed by charging battery, new battery now on order.

Also if being stood check out the carb(s) as the petrol may have turned to gunk inside them (try carb cleaner squirted through the air box!).

Hi

Couple of things with the GPZ.

Firstly, as already mentioned, the GPZ is a bugger for getting water in the petrol tank. Fine until you use reserve when it gets into the carbs (petrol floats on water, and the reserve takes fuel from the very bottom of the tank). Make sure you have enough petrol in so that you do not need to use reserve.

If there is water in the carbs then there is a drain screw on the bottom of each one.

The GPZ fuel tap does not have a prime position. Think both normal and reserve are vacuum operated, so the engine needs to be running (or cranking over reasonably quickly) for fuel to flow out of the tank to the carbs. Also it needs to be doing this for quite a while for the carbs to fill up (likely that having been sat any in the carbs has evaporated).

In summary, put a gallon or 2 of fresh petrol into the bike. Put the fuel tap to "ON". Drain the fuel out of the carbs. Put a fresh fully charged battery on to it (or use some jump leads with a car battery, although be careful as the GPZ battery terminals are quite close to the frame and you do not want to catch the +ve lead on to that). Then try again.

All the best

Keith

The clymer manual for the EX500 (the american name for the GPZ) is better than the haynes GPZ500s one. Clearer and more detailed IMO.
