Go to my local bike shop to see how much to change my oil, filter and spark plugs as it was due. They quote £200 with parts. Parts alone = £55. Parts only it is.

Equipped with youtube, a PDF of my service manual, some tools and a mate we set off to do the unthinkable. 2 hours later and presto all done. Gave my mate a score so all together cost me £75!!

Result!!

Change coolant and brake pads next for a grand total of £45. Very Happy

£145 labour? that's fucking disgusting.

hour's work tops for any experienced bike mechanic, therefore an hours labour charge.

ok in a main dealer that could be £70, in tipton you could get it done for £25!

what is it a harley?

Had something similar, dealer wanted over £200.

Got the oil, filter and all the tools for £50.

Took me a while (and four of us) due to the bloody oil filter not coming off! Next time it should be a lot quicker.

2 new sparks, new air filter, oil filter and oil change cost me about £45 in parts and a couple of hours in time if that.

The best bit is once you've done it once it just gets easier and easier when it comes to doing it again! And the fact you've saved £50+ which when your young like me makes all the difference. If you've got the income to blow on a full dealer service history on your ducati etc etc then that's up to you

So, if it takes an hour and you charge an hour, where is your profit margin?

This is why I haven't even considered taking mine to a garage. It's 30 years old, needs the brakes rebuilding, carbs cleaning and rebalancing, and generally a full service. I have no idea what the last owner did on it, so it's getting new filters, spark plugs and whatever else looks like it might be needed.

Doing it myself means it's going to be off the road for weeks rather than days, but it a) saves me a fortune, b) means I don't have to worry about any 'extras' sneaking into the job, and c) provides a great opportunity for me and the bike to get to know each other.

Home doing services also makes it more affordable servicing your bike more regularly. Mine gets an oil change every 1k, and filter change every 2k. For filters and oil its less than £20 on my bike for the decent stuff. Castrol Power 1, K&N oil filter & TNT air filters. Better than the stuff most dealers put in Thumbs Up Hasn’t seen a dealer scince 2k, fast approaching my 16k service which is a biggy though!

Also, well done! First ones always the hardest! Thumbs Up

top for oil filter, if you can get your hand round it, wipe it down a bit, get some wide tape, tape on it then turn the tape round so it's sticky side out then wrap some more, gives you tonnes of grip on the filter

OP is your bike really complex or something? I thought home-service oil and spark plug changes was the norm for motorbiking. Did all mine - and more - within the first week of owning it! Mr. Green Learn as you go!

Why is your dealer so expensive? My local Suzuki dealer services my gsxr along with an MOT and picking the bike up and dropping it off for £170!

Not really, a good mechanic should always be looking to do fixed time jobs in less than the book says it should take, that's where the money is.

If a mech does a 40 hour week and only ever bills 40 hours labour, I would think most dealerships wouldn't consider that good enough.
