My 2p worth: Fazer 600. For £1500, should just be able to get a later 2002-2003 Foxeye model with the newer styling, bigger tank and better headlights.

* Sensibly reliable as to not miss out on valuable riding time.
Check.

* Sporty enough for a hoon with the lads of an evening
Easily hit a tonne without even trying, even if just 95bhp. Brakes off an R1, so it'll stop you hooning when you need to!

* Comfy enough to tour for a week around Europe
Check. Plenty of topbox/wingrack options. ~50-55mpg, ~220mile tank range.

* something il find interesting and enjoy
Well, that one is down to you.

* be not above insurance group 16
Group 12, i.e. nice and cheap.

For example:

Fazer is a good shout, I'd still have my mk1 for a commuter / hack if it wasn't for the poop gearbox.

Slightly over budget, but worth the £150 extra IMO. The full luggage is worth £300.

Wouldn't worry about the mileage, they are hyper mile bikes and will go to the moon and back, that one looks well looked after. A 1998 bike as well, likely one of the newer you are likely to find for the money.

And they were the fastest bike in the world for about 6 years. Even when it was knocked off it's perch by the Blackbird, the ZZR is still faster in real world situations, with a superior top gear roll on performance.

Looking at it I do think the zx6r represents bloody good value for money these days. I do like the look of the zzr1100's but I think they would be a massive jump for me and I'd prob end up dead in a few months - one for the future tours around Europe me thinks.

I've just seen this on eBay, looks cheap, what's wrong with it lol

Is the 636 much more aggressive sports orientated? It certainly looks it.

There is a J model 636 that looks very much like the one you posted earlier, and then there is the B1H model. There is NO way that'll go for £1500, more like £2500 maybe £2750.the B1H model is much much more focussed, much less comfortable and pretty nutty to ride.

My Monster 750 fits the original bill. £1500 is doable - I paid £1650 for mine, but it was spotless and had only 6000 miles. I do take it for trips across Europe and it is great for hooning...

That's a B1H model then, my neighbour has one, fucking fast for a 600. So was the J model 2000-2002 then the B1H came along in 2003? The B1H looks more track focused to me. A proper point and shoot weapon

You can't dismiss the idea of a K series GSXR and then look at B1H's, they're quite harsh by comparison.

That was me pretty much dismissing the B1H's as they are out of budget and way too track focused. The K series GSXRs are still an option, it's finding an unabused one that's the challenge.

The J model ran from 2000-2002 then they released the A1P which looks the same but utilises the 636 engine rather than the 600.

All the way! You can get a pretty tidy Gen1 for the money, insurance group 15, and comfy as hell (well, for me anyway!)

The A1P, this I believe;

So the relative comfort / styling of the zx6r and the engine of the b1H, sounds like a good recipe. They command a price though so finding one for 1500-1700 is gonna be tough?!

Yeah the description looks right but I've never seen one on an 02 plate before. But yeah J model styling and essentially the B1h engine. Smile

I have a ZX6R-J2 and I'm going to jump on the bandwagon saying it is just about the best all round bike around for sensible money. It is fairly spacious and comfortable for my 6ft1 lanky frame, will tour 2 up with luggage without issue and when I'm in the mood for riding fast...my god does it do that well Mr. Green

The 636 model does command a bit of a premium and you will go from 60mpg (riding like a granny) to more like 50mpg. Average for my bike is around 50, 60 when doing sedate long rides and 40 for short hoons. For the sake of about 5hp and a bit of torque it's not really worth it. Find yourself a good condition 600 and be happy Smile

I will note that the 6 pot tokico brake calipers they come with need rebuilding seemingly constantly so budget for a set of Nissin 4 pot calipers and braided lines if the bike doesn't have them already (lots do). Feel free to PM me if you need more info.
