So, I've been riding around on my SRAD 600 for a year now, and the insurance has been absolutely raping me. Come renewal time, the insurer left me with a bumhole bigger than Cherie Blair's mouth.
So I decided that I've lived the whole sport-bike dream, and it was time to take a step back down until I stop being 23 years old and living in Croydon, because Ms Carol Nash didn't seem to like that.
I mean, the SRAD was great and all, and went like a bat out of hell but, quite frankly, it was kind of uninspiring. It sort of killed the supersport dream for me. It was uncomfortable, made my wrists ache, was large and cumbersome, and generally wasn’t a huge amount of fun. I had more fun on my Bandit SY. (See here for what happened to that – Clicky). I stuck it out with the SRAD, willing myself to love it, because it was my first sportbike. That’s what I always wanted right?
So then I bought this:

https://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n521/dragstaar/IMG-20130722-00093_zps99ff9711.jpg

A 2006 K6 Suzuki SV50 in that sexy blue with 22K on the clock. Went on ebay. Called the bloke and he wanted £1900. Turned up the next day, waved £1500 cash in his face, settled on £1650, which I thought was a bargain.
First Impressions
So how am I finding it? My mind is blown. This thing is a beast. My SRAD used to sit on my driveway generally being 13 years old and passive. This thing is different, just look at it. This thing is a yob, it hurls abuse at my neighbours and is generally a total prick, which I love. The SRAD was loud when it wanted to be, but this thing, the V-Twin rumble is orgasmic.
I fired this thing up for the first time and it sounded like Zeus and Odin had decided to ride into battle on Mount Olympus. Just at the press of my button.
Blip the throttle and you’ll release the kracken. Suzuki even issues a warning, just above the petrol cap. It reads:
“UNLEADED FUEL ONLY
WARNING: EXCESSIVE THROTTLE MAY WAKE LONG DEAD CREATURES FROM THEIR ETERNAL SLUMBER”
The sound is absolutely amazing. Nothing beats the sound of that deep V-Twin rumble. The only problem with it I find is that it restricts visibility greatly when riding down the road and sexy ladies are throwing their knickers at you when they hear the bike.
The Ride
I can’t help but wonder why I haven’t made this move earlier. I can’t ask for anything more from this bike in Central London. The torque is mad on a V-Twin. I know there are a lot more bikes out there that can do what the SV650 can do, plus more. I know the SV650 is just a basic bike, but that’s my point. For a basic bike is awesomeness. The bloody thing can pull away from stationary in top gear?!!
Now that may not be news to some, and many will not be impressed by that, but this is all new to me and I’m amazed.
The acceleration is crazy. She cruises fine, open up the throttle, and there is a dwarf who shoves a cactus up its backside and the thing lunges forward, throwing you through MPHs. Granted it runs out of puff in each gear quite quickly, but in London, in Town riding, you don’t need any more.
The only issue is the suspension. I was told the suspension was poor on these things, but wtf?? The front is softer than my dick after seeing your mother. Roll off the throttle and the thing dips like its dropped some change and is looking for it. Roll on again and suddenly the bike has seen something interesting in the sky.
Slow traffic riding is a chore, with the thing constantly trying to buck me off. Its seriously like trying surprise anal with the missus and holding on for the ride. Fun, but dangerous.
Which brings me to my next point
Who the fuck recommends this as a good first “Big Bike”. If this was my first big bike, I would be dead and maggots would be having a rollercoaster party in my small intestine right now. This thing is crazy.
Maybe its because I’ve never ridden a V-Twin before, or maybe its just because I’m a shit rider with no throttle control, but either way, I think a new rider would struggle on this. I know I certainly would have.
Its a huge barrel of laughs, but its a dominating beast. More so than my SRAD.
Verdict:
The SRAD is what you would consider to be a wife to whom you have been married for 30 years. She used to turn heads, and still does every now and then. She can cook, she brings you beer as you watch the football, and she rubs your shoulders after work. But she’s also a bit of a naggy bitch, and you’ve already fucked her every which way and the only new thing you can do with her is to try and convince her into trying anal or maybe a blowjob every now and then.
The SV650 is a dirty college slut. She knows exactly how to push your buttons. She’s got an amazing body, and an awesome rack that gets you hard just by looking at her. Push her buttons a bit and she’ll do that awesome thing she does with her tongue when she’s sucking you off, and she’ll genuinely enjoy it too.
Only thing is, she’s a bit stupid, and you know that ultimately, you’ll get bored of talking about The only way is essex and start looking for a sophisticated woman. But really, right now, who gives a fuck.
You got a sexy bitch ready to try every single filthy act your mind can think of, and you know everyone else on the road is going to be jealous of you when you tear away on you V-twin thundercloud. That is, until an RSV Mille comes along. |

Still think a TRX850 is a better choice than one of these.
They handle better, sound better, are more comfy and have FAR more character.

I really like the SV.
I would choose one over an SRAD any day. Only SRAD worth owning is the TL1000R. The SRAD-600 is the most bland piece of shit I've ever ridden, and the 750 is marginally better, but realistically, the only benefit over the 6, is the nicer looking forks.
SV every time. |

SV650's torque "curve" is flatter than Keira Knightley. I'd like to see how either of them rides when gripped and twisted firmly. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Horses for courses, innit.
If the OP’s regular bike use is slow urban then maybe the SV is more fun than the SRAD. I know that my CB500 is a brilliant city bike, but utterly underwhelms on A roads. My FireBlade was the opposite with town a hot, boring chore while excelling on the open road.
My CBF1000 is the best compromise I’ve found so far. Great on motorway and A roads yet still brilliant in the city, even though a bit on the lardy side. If it had a full fairing for better weather protection and lower mirrors for filtering it could possibly be the best commuter ever. ____________________ 2007 CBF1000 & 2016 CBF1000F - Commuter heaven | 1994 CBR600FR - Awaiting defibrillation |

It sounds like you may be afflicted with a riding style that could be politely called 'limp wristed'.
No; the SV does not have loads of torque, nor loads of low torque/power.
It does, however, have a fair bit lower gearing than sports bikes. So it gives the impression of having more low down as you're generally in a lower gear (and for first, maybe second you are.)
Personally, I wouldn't want 'owt to do with a lady that actually thought a SV was a 'sexy bike' - have some class, man!
The fact you think 'the acceleration is crazy' does rather suggest to me that you never learnt to ride the GSXR properly, which is perhaps why you found it uninspiring?
The GSXR should have been as fast if not faster and will have kept accelerating fast for longer.
Riding in town, personally I don't want so short gears - I liked that on my GSXR1000 I could be doing 40 indicated and still be at under 40% of max revs in first gear. So, all the 'go' you could want, but the bike also felt relaxed. Riding at 40 in first on an SV isn't so great.
| Quote: | Who the fuck recommends this as a good first “Big Bike”. If this was my first big bike, I would be dead and maggots would be having a rollercoaster party in my small intestine right now. This thing is crazy.
|
An SV? 'Crazy'?
Of your suggestions, I'm afraid it's the latter, or a problem with the bike - I've never seen a new rider struggle with an SV .
I'm afraid you're certainly fooling yourself if you think everyone on the road is going to be jealous of your commuter bike that's design is now over ten years old.
Incidentally - while the SV has a pretty bland engine, not all of that can be attributed to being a twin. There's plenty of four cylinder bikes with bland engines because they're intended as commuter bikes too. Sports twins tend to have a bit less of a linear feel - especially smaller ones - they tend to be lumpier low down, for a start, as they're made to be revved a bit more.
(Of course, you have to rev the SV to make proper progress, but it does a great job of convincing people that you might as well change up early, because northing's changing!) |

I do agree and think that v twins have a more interesting sound than inline fours . My Hyosung GT650R (very similar to SV engine), with it's blueflame exhaust sounds like 1000 trumpeting elephants!...or something like that But inline fours, in my mind sound like washing machines. |

That's actually quite interesting. Because I'll be perfectly honest, I just jump on the things and ride them, and never really think about how they work or anything.
I never tracked on the SRAD, which was probably a mistake, but the thing for me was that the speed was mad. On the A406 I'd open up the SRAD and she'd go flying.
I think what got me was that I posted this up the night I got the SV650, and I was genuinely expecting a turd that would feel like a CG and was very surprised that it wasn't.
I know use the word Torque, which I suppose for a mechanic would mean a very very specific thing. And when I say crazy, I don't mean TL1000 Widowmaker crazy, I mean crazy as in "Mofo stop jumping around!" crazy.
And I'll be the very very first to admit that I can't ride for shit. My SRAD probably disliked me more. I'm sure in the hands of a capable rider, the SRAD would tear shit up, but for me, I find that I can get more out of the SV650 more easily, than I could out of the SRAD. Bearing in mind when I say "more" i don't necessarily mean speed, because the SRAD definitely beats that hands down.
But the SV650 allows me to use it without having to be a good rider, and I'm pretty sure my riding style would be deemed limp-wristed by many.
Now don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed taking the SRAD up and over the 130mph mark (ahem on closed tracks), but I could only ever get that on a straight, and I could only corner at speed on a nice country lane. Put me in the city with it and it became a cumbersome lump.
As for the looks, I really really like the pointy. The SRAD was bloody nice, and would turn heads, but I find that the people who appreciated the SRAD and its looks were fat old bikers who would come over to me and say "oh its nice to see one of my first sports bikes still going strong!" (I'm ribbing, I know its only 13 years old)
Reading back over my post it does seem like I had a childish wet dream over the SV650, but I stand by what I said, I just found that I really really like it.
Maybe its to do with expectations, when I picked up the SRAD off Boundy on here, it was my first sportbike and I was expecting so much out of it. And yes, it delivered, but I was a tad bit disappointed at how hard it was to ride in and around town, and I do a lot of town riding.
Whereas, I went to pick up the SV650 thinking "meh, step down, its going to be massive pile of turd", but I was so pleasantly surprised I immediately came on here and started having a massive new thread verbal wankfest.
I'm sure as I get some more fast-riding experience and I ever got another SRAD, i'd look back at this thread and wonder what kinds of acid I was taking when I wrote it.
But for now, the SV650 suits my "limp-wristed" riding style just fine. I think the fact that I'm wondering how a learner can cope with this goes to show just how much of a Rossi I am. |
