Is it just me, or does almost every decent biking road, in north yorkshire at least, have to have a 'new' road surface laid by the lazy tight arse council method of, 'throw a few tonnes of gravel on the road, and lets see how many bikers we can have off' approach?
Seems everywhere i go it's the same. Even a stretch of road between skipton on swale and bedale, yesterday, no chippings down, other than probably a 25kg bags worth dumped half way round a bloody corner. Came closest I've ever been to falling off, and that includes hitting a deer 3 years ago!
Seriously not amused. If i thought any counciller would give a crap it wants taking up in bloody parliament before someone gets killed.
Rant over.
For now.
Hi by the way lol.

They've been resurfacing roads like this since they've been making tarmac roads.

It's nothing new. The council aren't interested, neither are parliament.

The only issue would be if they had put loose chippings down without warning signs, in which case complain to the council for country roads and the highways agency for trunk roads.

Slow down, smooth up. Be thankful for an intact, grippy surface when winter comes.

At least you know where you are with surface dressing. It's asphalt bitumen mastic you need to watch out for. Looks like a racetrack, grips like black-ice for the first year.

It's not like i ride like a maniac, and don't slow down, just that A, it seems to be everywhere, B, they never clear up the loose stuff afterwards, cars are fine, us? C, once winter comes, it'll all come adrift and just create more gravel and pot holes.
Anyone would think they do it to stop us going out on our bikes...

They've been and still are putting that tar and chip stuff everywhere over here too. I agree that they should stop using it also.

Came round a corner this evening only to come across this stuff. No warning sign prior to it, only sinage was to say there were no road markings Mad

I understand tbe reasons for doing it, which is basically because it's cheap but, I'd rather they did a proper job of resurfacing roads, rather than this cheap cowboy work they do. It's far too dangerous for two wheels, no matter how slow you go.

They make roads for the sake of a transport network not a bludy playground/race-track.

This stuff is everywhere here too, however there are one or two roads that for some reason have been done properly with lovely smooth Tarmac, it is so much nicer and gripper to ride on.

Are you around the Tour de France route?

As you'd expect, a lot of roads around the route being resurfaced in West Yorkshire.

They're in the process of resurfacing the A500 near Crewe + Nantwich with what must be a ton of gravel per meter.

I don't know why as it's one of the best condition roads in the area..

Haven't noticed much of this at all in the south, is it just a temperature thing up north 'preparing' roads for winter or something - not that loose grits probably an ideal preperation Rolling Eyes

it's infuriating.

if they just spend a couple of quid more for a steamroller, did a once over and swept up the loose then everyone would be happy.

it's not just bikes that have issues with this.. this crap causes chipped paint, windscreens etc.. from the stones cars in front inevitably kick up

plus there's so much room for error. they had to redo a main d/c where i live 3 times! first because it chucked it down straight after and washed the gravel away, and second because they didn't embed it AT ALL and normal traffic just pushed all the gravel off the road. they finally re-did it and rollered it and now its perfect. if they'd have just done that in the first place it would have saved them a tonne of cash.

Not been to Buckinghamshire then. At one point half of my old 13 mile commute was newly resurfaced. The rest of it had pot holes that you could get air off on the way out...

Christ Shocked only places i recall seeing it in bristol is odd side roads literaly tiny avenue/closes, and one 20 metre section they literally dug up entirely for road works for a few months. Maybe im just missing the spots theyve done on my common routes Confused

I love it. Around plumton the other week me and a mate found a road with lots of gravel on it. Hooned it right up to 65 and had the rear wheel slipping out a lot. Thumbs Up Mr. Green

Try not to use front brake though. Laughing

You missed it. About a month ago they did most roads around henfield/steyning/partridge green area and Im aware of quite a few more but didnt encounter them myself. Edburton road is quite fun, but gets quite scary with gravel

They rarely bother to do city roads this way. I noticed they have also done the roundabouts - properly with a steam roller, at adsa and by hangleton on the A27, which were both far too bumpy to get decent lean on before.

Around ours it seems to be potholes that are the problem, especially after the bad winter. Some have been patched up (poorly by the looks of it). Also why does every bloody bend have to have 3 random manhole covers? Evil or Very Mad
